What do we need:

Amway is seeking a Research Scientist to join our Chemical Quality Control team within the Amway Innovation & Sciences division. This team, located at our Ada, Michigan headquarters, provides a broad range of chemistry-related technical services and expertise, supporting Amway's global Innovation, Manufacturing and Supply Chain functions. This is a first shift position.

What's special about this team:

The QC Chemistry group is a dynamic team of 18 FTEs and 6-7 contractors, focused on testing and releasing raw materials, in-process samples and finished goods in three high-throughput labs. These labs employ a broad range of instrumentation with methodologies including wet chemistry, HPLC/UPLC, GC, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, NIR, FTIR and more. The materials and products tested in the labs support several plants/products across campus ranging from supplements to protein powders to personal care products. This team works under the umbrella of the QC Department, which also includes Microbiology, Incoming Material Inspection and Records Review. This team works cross-functionally with partners in Innovation & Sciences, as well as Manufacturing and Supply Chain.

What's special about this role:

This position is based at our Ada, Spaulding lab location. The role supports the Chemical Quality Control team, providing day to day lab support, test method and specification improvements, technical support and troubleshooting with both instrumentation and process efficiencies. In-lab testing responsibilities support all business lines, consisting of active, vitamin, mineral and protein testing for raw materials and finished goods. Additionally, you may act as a key point of contact for contract/suppliers on method alignment and will investigate instrumentation discrepancies to offer resolution. This role will also be responsible for leading all non-nutrition out of spec investigations and assisting with general quality issues, requiring a good understanding and working relationship with manufacturing, quality engineers and supply chain. An important focus of this role will be offering solutions for process improvements. A sciences background with experience in nutrition AND/OR drug quality assurance is a requirement. Required qualifications:
  • BS degree in chemistry, biology, Life sciences or related field
  • Minimum 3 - 5 years' experience in a food/nutrition/drug quality assurance environment
  • Background in chemistry testing, with a focus on method alignment & troubleshooting instrumentation


Skills to be successful in the role:
  • GMP chemistry laboratory experience preferred
  • Experience supporting specification development through test method support
  • Background in Out of Spec investigations and manufacturing operations
  • Experience with Empower, Starlims, PLM, SharePoint, JDE, Blue Yonder, and Excel
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Flexible team player, self-motivated, ability to be adaptable and work independently and as part of a team
