Job Summary:
This position works in the Cheryl Ackert-Bicknell Laboratory, under Cheryl Ackert-Bicknell, PhD.
We focus on the genetic regulation of bone mass and the genetic causes of bone disease from the point of view of bone formation and strength. We use both forward and reverse genetics studies to interrogate the genetic causes of phenotypes critical to understanding bone quality that cannot be readily studied in human populations. These phenotypes of interest include bone composition, bone formation and mineralization by the osteoblast. In addition, we participate in many human cohort studies aimed at understanding the etiology of musculoskeletal disease wherein we determine the biological function of genes found to be associated with musculoskeletal traits. Lastly, we study the diagnosis of and the consequences of postoperative infection, with an emphasis on an infection associated with spinal instrumentation.

Key Responsibilities:
- Mouse husbandry, genotyping, skeletal and non-skeletal tissue harvest.
- Collection of skeletal imaging information from live mice and harvested tissue samples
- Isolation and purification of protein and nucleic acid from harvested tissues from mice and humans
- Molecular analyses of mouse and human tissues, including Western blotting, qPCR/PCR, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence
- Culture of primary cells and established cell lines. Transfection of cells with viral vectors or plasmid vectors.
- Histology of musculoskeletal tissues (rodent and human), including embedding, sectioning and imaging.

- Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
- A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis
Intermediate Professional Level:
- Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field

- One (1) year professional level research experience
Senior Professional Level:

Preferred Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience working in a molecular biology lab or equivalent research experience.
- Experience with culture of primary mammalian cells and cell lines is required.
- 1+ years of experience working with laboratory mice.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Understanding of skeletal physiology and genetics
- Ability to work both in a team environment and independently.
- Strong organizational and record-keeping skills
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- Computer skills in both Mac and PC environments and use of standard programs such as Word and Excel
- Bioinformatics and or programming expertise in languages such as R, Python or Matlab would be a plus
