Summary

The Crawford/ Estes/Hyser Labs at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a Research Technician III. This laboratory performs basic and clinical research related to gastrointestinal (GI) virus replication, cell-host interactions and pathogenesis. An ongoing project is to identify mechanisms of rotavirus exploitation of cellular pathways involved in viral replication and pathogenesis. This Research Technician will be heavily involved in generating and performing experiments with reverse genetics-derived rotaviruses but will also support postdoctoral fellows and graduate students in their focused molecular biology experimental research projects. The Research Technician will also assist in the running and organization of the lab and perform a variety of experimental techniques under general supervision.

Job Duties

  • Performs experiments using molecular biology technologies including western blot, viral and bacterial cultivation.
  • Performs mammalian and organoid cell culture.
  • Performs infectivity assays and viral quantification assays including fluorescent focus and plaque assays as well as qRT-PCR analysis of samples with detailed record keeping.
  • Generates and performs experiments with parental versus reverse genetics-derived viruses.
  • Participates in lab meetings and reads applicable literature.
  • Prepares figures and assists in writing related to experiments performed.
  • Maintains lab supplies and inventory (ordering, stocking, preparing solutions/media).
  • Maintains general lab environment, including, but not limited to, equipment maintenance and repairs, organization, and cleanliness of the lab.
  • Maintains and ensures compliance with biosafety and laboratory regulations.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • One year of relevant experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in basic science or a related field.
  • Experience in molecular biology, excellent aseptic technique and general skills common to a microbiology lab are a must. Preference given for experience in virology research, PCR and CRISPR.
  • Strong documentation and organizational skills with the ability to keep accurate records of all work performed.
  • Good analytical and computer skills.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn new techniques with instruction.
  • Demonstrated strong work ethic, including ability to take initiative, prioritize tasks, use good judgment and complete duties.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a team member.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and professionally in a team with diverse backgrounds.
