Duties & Responsibilities

Under medical direction and general supervision of Senior Technician, operates and monitors bio-medical machines, devices, equipment or instruments in a hospital, clinic or other medical facility as part of the diagnostic examination or treatment plan for patients, performing regular routine tasks and specialized tasks considered to be of average difficulty.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Turn on and run self-test on all anesthesia machines to assure compliance.
  • Check that anesthesia machines and carts contain the minimum par levels of all supplies.
  • Pick up and replace medication trays in the Main OR, L&D and GI, IR, MRI
  • During turnover between cases, dispose of "dirty" items such as suction, circuit, laryngoscope blades and wipe down machine to ensure the anesthesia machine and anesthesia workspace is ready to be used for another case.
  • Ensure that the anesthesia carts, machines, cabinets and workroom(s) do not have any expired items and are stocked with minimum par levels at all times.
  • Maintain and organize the anesthesia workroom(s) in an orderly manner to ensure items are functional and readily available at all times.
  • Neatly maintain anesthesia supplies in the materials management department, organize and dispose of any empty boxes as required by materials management
  • Maintain a physical presence in designated perioperative areas with a readiness to assist anesthesiologists/CRNAs, as needed.
  • At the end of scheduled cases, promptly re-stock carts, cabinets and machines to maintain minimum supply par levels.
  • Stock anesthesia workroom(s) when supplies go below par levels.
  • Maintain inventory of all supplies in anesthesia workroom and give an accurate weekly report to Materials Management and outside suppliers.
  • Promptly alert supervisor and biomedical engineering regarding broken, malfunctioning, or missing supplies/equipment.
  • Check all monitoring equipment daily and assist anesthesiologists/CRNAs with the preparation of such equipment (including changing anesthesia machine circuit) according to established departmental procedures and protocols.
  • Be available to assist anesthesiologists/CRNAs with difficult airways and other emergencies by bringing the requested and appropriate equipment.
  • Ensure that all anesthetizing locations have the necessary monitors, equipment, and supplies for the safe administration of a general anesthetic.
  • Work collaboratively as a team member with colleagues and department personnel.
  • Promptly respond to emergency situations in all anesthetizing locations and ensure all appropriate emergency equipment is readily available and functional.
  • Proactively monitor the operating room schedule to ensure availability to promptly turnover operating rooms between cases.
  • Set up machines in out of OR sites
  • Proactively check all anesthetizing locations between cases to ensure adequate supplies are available.


Minimum Qualifications
1. Associate Degree, which included courses in the bio-medical technician field, and two years experience in the appropriate bio-medical technician field in an approved hospital or health facility; or,
2. Senior high school graduation or possession of an Equivalency Diploma, and three years experience in the appropriate bio-medical technician field in an approved hospital or health facility; or,
3. A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.
4. Employees performing blood analysis require certificates of qualification issued by the New York City Department of Health in subspecialty of 29 (Ph blood gases) or specialty 28 (general clinical chemistry).

Note: Effective January 1, 2015, employees performing central service functions, while serving in the Group 12 title of Bio-Medical Equipment Technician (215620), must either possess valid certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) issued by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management or as a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) issued by the Certifying Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, or be grandfathered. Grandfathering requires that employees provide evidence that they have been employed in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one (1) year occurring between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2014 and that they have competently performed central service functions during the course of their qualifying experience and will continue to be able to competently perform such functions during the course of their employment at HHC. In addition, these employees will be required to annually complete ten (10) hours of continuing education credits in order to remain qualified to perform central service functions at an HHC facility.
