Job Description

Purpose:

To assure all equipment is in working order and staff members are able to operate the equipment. Under the general supervision of the Nursing Service Director or Designed, orders and maintains an inventory of all materials, supplies and equipment required for the care of patients, is cognizant of the philosophy, standards, objectives and policies of the Unit and Department of Nursing.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
• Check all equipment on a weekly basis and prior to a scheduled case.
• Maintain all equipment and have equipment repaired when necessary. Keep a log with all pertinent Information regarding equipment repairs.
• Train all personnel on the use and care of equipment and schedule in-service for all new equipment.
• Keep all maintenance contracts on file and up-to-date and re-new before expiration date with purchasing.
• Keep all service manuals for all staff members to refer to.
• Correlate equipment and accessory items needed, so that it is always ready to use (example: disposables).
• Troubleshoot equipment during procedures when necessary.
• Assist with orientation of technical personnel.
• Maintains Inventory and stock controls for all supplies and equipment and completes related clerical work/requirements.
• Reports equipment needs and makes recommendations to the Nursing Director for purchases of both capital and expendable equipment.
• Follow up on outstanding orders.
• Prepares a monthly review of stock issue reports to highlight trends, consumption of materials, over expenditures and discrepancies; reports pertinent data to O.R. Director and service line manager.
• Communicates with related hospital departments and surgical supply company representatives to maintain efficient management of materials and goods.
• Keeps Invoices up-to-date.
• Maintain professional competence through participation in continuing education.
• Participate in PI, joint commission and Infection control activities.
• Prepares a monthly review of stock issue reports to highlight trends, consumption of materials, over expenditures and discrepancies, reports pertinent data to the Director.
• Maintains AORN/AWOHNN standards of practice and recommended procedures.
• Other duties required by the department.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Associate Degree, which included course work in Bio-Medical Technician field, and three years experience in the appropriate bio-medical technician field in an approved hospital or health facility; or,
2. Senior high school graduation or possession of a High School Equivalency Diploma, and four years experience in the appropriate bio-medical technical field in an approved hospital or health facility; or,
3. A satisfactory equipment combination of education and experience.
4. Employees performing blood analysis require certificates of qualification issued by the New York City Department of Health in the subspecialty of 29 (Ph blood gases) or specialty 28 (general clinical chemistry).

• Exhibition of courteous and effective communication with all health care team members, related hospital departments and surgical supply company representatives to maintain efficient management of materials and goods.
