The City of Phoenix Planning and Development Department (PDD) guides the physical development of the city by preserving our historic sites, planning what can be built where, and ensuring the safe construction of buildings and infrastructure. The department is comprised of the following sections Zoning, Planning, Historic Preservation, Property Records, Management Services and Administrative sections; including Development review and inspection which involves Commercial, Residential and Civil. PDD currently has an opening for a Senior Engineering Technician, within the Civil Services Section at the Civil Permits and Water Services Counter. PDD encompasses the full spectrum of development within the City of Phoenix.

The Senior Engineering Technician, within the Civil Services Section provides customer service at the Civil Permits and Water Services Counter, Counter 8. The position is a counter position and will work Monday through Friday 8:00 to 5:00pm. Some of the job responsibilities include processing payments for all civil permits, bond collection and set up, processing work orders for water services and sewer installation, providing water and service tap information, contractor verification with updating insurance, mapping of tap investigation results, morning reports, counter phones, desk phones, faxes, and the shared counter email box. The position would be responsible for the creation of utility trenching permits from plans received from Utility Coordination (Streets) and a backup plan reviewer for Monitoring Wells.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to perform under intense deadlines.
  • Ability to perform basic math computations.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple specifications, plans, and shop drawings.
  • Ability to produce documents using property sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, and spelling.
  • Demonstrates effective seamless customer service, integrity, and commitment to assigned essential position functions.
  • Proficiency with using Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).

SALARY

Pay Range: $21.02 to $41.63 per hour.

Hiring Range: $21.02 to $31.06 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of experience in paraprofessional engineering work.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
  • Three years of experience in paraprofessional engineering work.
  • Experience in cash handling practices.
  • Plan review and electronic plan review experience.
  • Experience using KIVA and/or KIVA IMS applications.
  • Experience performing highly detailed data entry in a fast-pace environment.
  • Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping software.
  • Experience routing, tracking, and reviewing less complex construction plans.
  • Experience working with developers or contractors in the construction field.
  • Experience with performing research and writing reports on accumulated data.
  • Experience providing high levels of customer service in a front counter setting or public contact environment.
