In this role, you will design and develop sophisticated robotic instruments that provide robust clinical value. You will be a vital member of a product development team, leading various assignments in collaboration with other design engineers, manufacturing engineers, designers, and multi-functional partners.

What You'll Do:

  • Design, iterate, and evaluate product concepts quickly and effectively via prototype builds, laboratory testing, and/or computer simulations.
  • Lead development of design requirements and rationale based on user needs and product function; translate design requirements into concepts/solutions.
  • Develop test methods, design/build fixtures and systems for testing, and generate/process/analyze advanced engineering data to meet design spec's.
  • Commercialize new products via the design control process, applying good documentation practices, spanning from feasibility to V&V through launch.
  • Conduct detailed reviews of designs, test methods, requirements, spec's, etc. and effectively communicate technical information in written/verbal forms.


Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related science/engineering field.


Required Skills & Experience:

  • 4+ years of product development and design experience. Or 3+ years of product development and design experience with MS in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related science/engineering field.
  • Experience with complex mechanical design (mechanisms, machine elements, mechanical interfaces) and engineering analysis (algebraic/geometric calculations).
  • Experience developing and using 3D CAD models (SolidWorks preferred), GD&T, free-body diagrams, strength of materials, and DOE's.
  • Experience with engineering investigations, problem solving, root cause, prototype rework, and component modification.
  • Experience working with mfg engineers/suppliers on DFM/A, Design to Cost, and prototyping to optimize designs for manufacturability and reliability.
  • Experience developing and applying tolerance analysis, stress-strain analysis, FEA, simulated use tests, verification tests, statistical analysis, and risk analysis.
  • Strong multi-functional communication, collaboration, and teaming skills with ability to effectively present project status, opportunities, and risks


Other Requirements:

  • Ability to travel up to 25% domestic US and Internationally, with overnight stays.
  • Ability to work onsite at the J&J office in Cincinnati, OH.


Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • MS in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related science/engineering field.
  • Able to provide positive and constructive feedback to teammates on product concepts and designs; encourage and mentor less experienced engineers.
  • Highly organized with strong creative, analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills; Experience working independently with minimal guidance.
  • Able to advance projects in an ambiguous environment, set and prioritize goals appropriately, and make decisions/drive action with limited data.
  • Experience working on a multi-functional product development team with demonstration of inclusive behaviors that inspire and develop others.
  • Systems-based design experience, including integration of cross-disciplinary technologies (e.g., mechanical, electrical, controls, software).
  • Data analysis experience with Python, MatLab, or similar programming languages.
  • Experience in the design, development, and commercialization of medical devices (or other regulated products) with an understanding of their application.


Work Environment:

  • This position operates in a laboratory/assembly environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.


Physical Demands:

  • May require lifting of up to 50 lbs. and operation of hoisting equipment for heavier loads.
  • May require prolonged periods of standing, bending, sitting, and kneeling during system assembly.


The anticipated base pay range for this position in the Cincinnati, OH area is $101,000 to $162,725.

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation's performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company's discretion on an individual basis.
