The Electromechanical & Optical Systems Department of the Applied Physics Division at Southwest Research Institute conceives, develops, designs, and delivers specialized custom electrical, mechanical, and optical hardware system solutions to benefit the government, industry, and the public.
Objectives of this Role:
- Advance tradecraft and engineering/artistic standards by creating and refining prototypes with practical skill in soft casting silicon and urethanes, ensuring products achieve aesthetic excellence.
- Assisting in applying specialized techniques in the areas of fabrication, assembly, coating, painting and color matching), upholding superior artisanship in finishing and detailing complex designs. Adept in traditional and digital illustration and design techniques.
- Guide precision crafting through fabrication techniques including but not limited to laser engraving & cutting, 3D printing, scanning, machining, soldering, welding, and painting, translating artistic visions into tangible components while adhering to technical specifications.
- Assist, lead, and troubleshoot in the fabrication and design of detailed projects, such as auto body work and packaging, to ensure a seamless blend of creative execution and structural integrity.
- Address complex issues in fabrication/assembly across various domains—mechanics, optical systems, auto body, electrics and more.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
- Collaborate in the design and refinement of fabricated components, ensuring prototypes meet both artistic and functional specifications. Assist as needed with logging test data and computer related activities.
- Skillfully work with soft casting silicon and urethanes, creating intricate parts that elevate the overall aesthetics and functionality of our designs.
- Collaborate with colleagues in precision artisanship/craft, adhering to industry best practices and capturing progress in fabrication and testing.
- Direct precision crafting with techniques like laser engraving, cutting, and painting, turning artistic concepts into precise, tangible components.
- Support design, assembly, and testing, utilizing skills such as hands-on tradecraft, casting, detailed painting, and fabrication to ensure components meet design and quality standards.
Requirements:
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent or an Associates degree in applied science or engineering, or related certifications.
- 2+ years: HS diploma or equivalent or related certifications with experience in various fabrication, casting and artesian tradecraft. Experience in the application of various paints and coatings. Skilled in visual artistry and attention to detail. Proficiency in 3D printing and laser cutting desired.
- 0 years: Associates degree with experience in various fabrication, casting and artesian tradecraft. Experience in the application of various paints and coatings. Skilled in visual artistry and attention to detail. Proficiency in 3D printing and laser cutting desired.
- A valid/clear driver's license is required.
