Job Description

1) Triage patients through the obstetrical emergency room m order of priority, differentiating emergent, urgent and non-urgent.
2) Performs initial assessment on all admitted laboring and non-laboring ante-partum patients within 4 hours of admission and refer accordingly, i.e.: social services, nutritional, psychosocial etc.
3) Screens patient for pain during the initial assessment and reassess according to guidelines.
4) Categorize patients in the appropriate level of classification.
5) Applies external fetal monitor and interprets fetal heart tracing and urine activity
6) Implements intervention appropriately based on fetaI heart rate pattern and material status during labor.
7) Identifies emergency situations, observes age and notifies provider accordingly.
8) Administer medication according to the 6 rights, safety and infection control guidelines and or per provider orders.
9) Collaborate patient care with other disciplines accordingly.
10) Assist with the application of scalp electrode/IUP, fetal blood sampling.
11) Provides initial care of the newborn of delivery.
12) Facilitate mother-infant bonding including initiation breast feeding.
13) Assess learning needs preferences. Promotes patient education at the most appropriate time. Identifies patient/family learning needs (age appropriate), and teaches appropriate principles and procedures related to care in relation to age.
14) Demonstrates knowledge on restraints guidelines.
15) Demonstrates awareness and acceptance of cultural diversity in patient's population and workforce.
16) Provide patients education accordingly.
17) Identifies and demonstrate technique on interpersonal/team building.
18) Assess monitors and evaluates patient's response on sedation analgesic consideration on age specific needs.
19) Demonstrates knowledge on limited English proficiency.
20) Paiticipates on the data collection process.

Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
Special Note:
For assignments in Post-Acute Care ONLY, individuals meeting the following criteria may also be considered for appointment: Graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as licensure qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse (RN) and has applied for licensure as an RN. These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN for up to 90 days immediately following graduation pending receipt of a limited permit, which selected candidates must apply for and receive within the same 90-day period. Once a limited permit is received, individuals can practice nursing, under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN at a NYC Health + Hospitals health care setting for up to one (1) year from the date of issuance of the limited permit. In addition, must hold or obtain through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
