SUMMARY:
  • Instructs students in math or science (grades 6-12) using various teaching methods and performing the following duties.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Teach (full-time) approved math and/or science courses in grades 6-12 with appropriate certificate endorsements.
  • Prepare course objectives and outline for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements of state and school.
  • Demonstrates the ability to decide on the best use of methods and materials to help students acquire necessary skills, taking into account the different needs and abilities of individual students.
  • Demonstrates qualities of patience, understanding, trustworthiness, and attention to work. Possesses a thorough knowledge of the subject matter.
  • Administers tests to evaluate pupil progress and records results. Issues reports to inform parents of student progress.Keeps attendance records.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Meets with parents to discuss student progress and problems.
  • Participates in at least (4) out of the (9) days of annual high-quality professional development sponsored or approved by the ALSDE.
  • Assists pupils in selecting a course of study.
  • Counsels students in adjustment and academic problems.


NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Other duties as assigned.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Participating teachers will be on a contract for 189 days.
  • A teacher who has attained continuing service status (tenure) with their employing Local Education Agency (LEA), and elects participation in the TEAMS Program under the same LEA, shall be deemed to have voluntarily relinquished tenure status and protections under the Students First Act. Any teacher who has attained continuing service status (tenure) can revert to their previous service status if they do not pass the advanced credentials test and/or obtain advanced credentials in an agreed-upon timeframe.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Hold a valid and approved Alabama Professional Educator Certificate or alternate certificate in middle-level math or science (OR) secondary math, science, or computer science (SEE ATTACHMENT: TEAMS Approved Mathematics, Science, and Computer Science Certificates AND Endorsements/or Grades 6-12 Mathematics and Science Courses);
  • Teach full-time approved math and/or science courses in grades 6-12 with the appropriate endorsements (SEE ATTACHMENT: TEAMS Approved Mathematics, Science, and Computer Science Courses/or Grades 6-12 Mathematics and Science); and
  • Currently hold or plan to obtain an advanced credential from either the National Institute for STEM Education or National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Certification in math or science.


CERTIFICATES/CREDENTIALS and Contract OPTIONS for Participation in TEAMS:
  • Option 1: The teacher holds a valid and approved Alabama certificate in math or science and teaches approved courses [full-time] but lacks an advanced credential necessary to obtain an advanced contract pursuant to the TEAMS. The Teacher shall be employed on this preliminary contract for a period of one (1) year while working toward their advanced credential.
  • Option 2: The teacher holds a valid and approved Alabama certificate in math or science, teaches approved courses [full-time], and holds an advanced credential allowing for an advanced contract pursuant to TEAMS. The Teacher shall be employed on this advanced contract for a period of up to three (3) years.
  • Option 3: The teacher holds a valid and approved Alabama certificate in math or science, teaches approved courses [full-time], holds an advanced credential, and has more than twenty (20) years of service. The Teacher shall be employed on this advanced contract for a period of five (5) years.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret teacher textbooks, general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, parents, and the general public.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. Ability to figure student percentages for grades and explain how the percentage is derived.


REASONING ABILITY:
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk, and hear. The employee frequently is required to use their hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is frequently required to sit and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.

  • We need verification of previous public school teaching experience. Use the following information when requesting verification of experience from your past employment at other boards of education:
    • Within the state of Alabama, experience must be verified on Supplement EXP
    • Outside the state of Alabama, we must have a letter (on school district letterhead) or public school district form showing beginning and ending dates stating your years of service and position held while employed
    • Credit is awarded for public school experience only, private, parochial, or similar experience will not be accepted
    • Experience must be full time at least 50%-100% of the academic year
    • Administrative credit will be awarded only for experience in the same position, i.e., principal for principal position as stated in the salary schedule
    • Transfer Sick Leave: If you have sick leave from another state school system or from another state of Alabama agency, you must have a Sick Leave Transfer form sent from your previous employer to our Human Resources department
  • The Decatur City Board of Education awards a salary based on the highest degree earned, even if the degree is outside education. The degree must be verified on an official transcript & recognized by the Alabama State Department of Education.
