Why does the job exist?

The Accountant and Auditor Advanced position exists to ensure the general ledger accounts of the Department are reconciled monthly. The position is responsible for biweekly payroll reconciliation, monitoring capital expenditures, recording assets, depreciation and asset disposals as needed in the Asset Management module of the SHARE system. The position is responsible for processing daily deposits, monthly federal reimbursement requests and will process all operating transfers to other state agencies.

How does it get done?

This is an accounting position responsible for recording transactions to the general ledger, preparing reconciliations and maintaining accuracy of the general ledger and will also be required to test during the implementation of new legislation and Business Tax Rates within the tax reporting software (GenTax).

This position:
* Works directly under the guidance and supervision of the Financial Services Bureau chief to ensure all department accounts are in order.
* Is expected to have a working knowledge of the Accounts receivable, General ledger, Asset Management, and accounts payable module to effectively reconcile payroll biweekly, process federal
and other deposits, manage department assets, process operating transfers and other journal entries as well as fund balance reports.
* At year end, will propose accrual entries as needed and prepare audit schedules and other deliverables in collaboration with supervisor.
* Will need to have a professional attitude and good customer skills and is expected to work with department stakeholders like vendors, federal administrators, other state agencies and internal staff.
* Will coordinate with other Financial Services Bureau units to complete tasks while adhering to proper internal controls.

Ideal Candidate

Preferred experience:

* Maintaining a general ledger for multiple funds
* Account reconciliations
* Working with Microsoft excel spreadsheets utilizing advanced functions (Pivot tables, formulas, etc.)
* Governmental accounting with recording and reconciling journal entries
* Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) Chart of Accounts and Model Accounting Practices (MAP)
* New Mexico People Soft human resources and financial management reporting system (SHARE)

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Auditing or Business Administration and two (2) years directly related work experience in accounting, auditing, finance and/or budgeting. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Must be current with all tax reporting/payment. Employment is subject to post offer pre-employment criminal background check to include fingerprint checks and is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
