ACCOUNTING & AUDIT: Accounting monitors the Departments accounts. The bureau ensures all financial transactions are in compliance with state and federal laws. Audit monitors and reviews school district and charter school federal and state compliance laws, rules and regulations.
Why does the job exist?
Ensures that model accounting practices are followed within school districts and charter schools.
How does it get done?
Complete federal and state compliance audits and statewide finding formula component audits of a portion of 89 school districts and 97 charter schools statewide.
Who are the customers?
Secretary of Education, School Boards, Superintendents, Head of School Administrators, Legislatures, Teachers and Students.
Ideal Candidate
Ideal Candidate has the following:
Five (5) years of financial, federal and/or compliance audit experience.
Knowledge and experience of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Governmental Accounting Standards Board, New Mexico Administrative Code, and New Mexico Statutes.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or Business Administration and five (5) years of directly related experience in budgeting, accounting and/or auditing. For use at the State Investment Council Only: any budgeting, accounting and/or auditing experience is acceptable. Substitutions apply. See Substitution Table below.

• Education and years of experience must be related to the purpose of the position.
• If Minimum Qualification requires a specific number of "semester hours" in a field (e.g. 6 semester hours in Accounting), applicants MUST have those semester hours in order to meet the minimum qualifications. No substitutions apply for semester hours.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Some occasional travel is required for meetings and conferences.
