Detailed Position Information
The Department of Modern Languages and Classics at The University of Alabama invites applications for a renewable contract (RCAP) faculty position in Chinese starting August 16, 2025. The successful applicant will serve as Chinese Language Program Director of a vibrant and established coordinated program of elementary and intermediate language courses plus advanced levels. Duties include developing curriculum, supervising instructors, and teaching both undergraduate Chinese classes and graduate classes on foreign language teaching methods and Second Language Acquisition. Service expectations will be commensurate with rank.

Area of specialization in Chinese is open, although a strong background in foreign language pedagogy, web-based instructional technologies, or second language acquisition is highly desirable. Required qualifications include PhD in Chinese or related fields in hand by August 16, 2025; native or near-native fluency in Chinese and English; record of excellence in teaching at all college levels of Chinese language and culture in a comparative perspective; strong understanding of current best practices in world language pedagogy; experience with current instructional technologies, study abroad, and online language teaching; willingness and ability to teach either in-person or online as needed; commitment to curricular innovation, including the creation of online language courses and translation courses, Chinese heritage education, and AI-assisted language acquisition. Research on bilingualism is particularly desired with an ability to work collegially and effectively with students and colleagues from all backgrounds. Review of applications will begin immediately.
