Department Summary

The College of Science at the University of North Texas consists of the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics and the interdisciplinary programs Teach North Texas, BioDiscovery Institute, Advanced Environmental Research Institute, and Interdisciplinary Program in Applied and Computational Science. The college offers Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD degrees in science and mathematics, currently serving more than 4,000 majors. Our faculty are world-class researchers in science and mathematics, and the college faculty and staff work together to provide excellent support to our students in their academic education and professional development.

Position Overview

Entry-level position responsible for advising, and providing professional development, to students interested in health careers. Advises pre-health students on the courses necessary for entry into professional schools, the timeline for applying to such programs, and the characteristics of a competitive application.

  • Ability to learn and use a variety of simple to complex computer applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:
  • Be proficient on Microsoft Word and willing to learn UNT system software needed to perform the required duties.
  • Be able to work well with other people and interact well with students, professors, and administrators.
  • Be willing to volunteer for various duties such as representing the Health Professions office at community college events, recruitment fairs, Preview Day, etc.
  • Good communication skills, both written and spoken, are required.

Job Duties:
  • Demonstrate an ability to be an effective team member by assisting colleagues when needed; includes serving as a marshal during COS commencement ceremonies.
  • Conduct and assist in the production and dissemination of accurate information for students concentrating in the health professions, including Canvas and other relevant websites. Update resources, answer emails, and perform basic administrative responsibilities as directed.
  • Advise students via in person, email, phone, or virtual meetings on the requirements for health professional schools, class selection, and developing a timeline for admission.
  • Advise students on how to develop strong applications to professional schools. Provide professional development for students, including mock interviews and reviewing application essays.
  • Assist with seminars for prospective, incoming, and current students, including informational sessions, Preview Day, and other various programs throughout the year.
  • Assist with freshmen and transfer orientations by presenting information about health professions and advising students on their upcoming semester schedules.
  • Become a member of the health professions advising organizations and attend conferences when available. Organizations include: NAAHP, SAAHP, and TAAHP.
  • Represent the Office of Health Professions at UNT recruiting events, when necessary, on and off campus.

Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday 8-5, Occasional evenings and weekends. Opportunities for work from home days.
