Position Information

TxDOT's Bridge Division is looking for an engineer (Transportation engineer I - IV) to join the Bridge Construction and Maintenance Branch. This engineer will work closely with others at Bridge Division and districts to support complex construction projects around the state and to promote TxDOT's bridge maintenance initiatives. Position Description

Transportation Engineer I

Salary Grade - B24 - $62,004 - $94,913

Performs bridge and structural engineering work in the functional area of bridge construction and maintenance at the

Bridge Division. The engineer is familiar with construction specifications, materials, and bridge standards in support of

statewide bridge construction. The engineer diagnoses and performs structural analyses of problems, determines cause,

and develops solutions to a wide variety of bridge construction issues, defects, deterioration, and damage. Ensures

compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact

with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require

frequent supervision of details.

Transportation Engineer II

Salary Grade - B25 - $66,259 - $101,556

Performs complex bridge and structural engineering work in the functional area of bridge construction and maintenance at

the Bridge Division. The engineer is familiar with construction specifications, materials, and bridge standards in support of

statewide bridge construction. The engineer diagnoses and performs structural analyses of problems, determines cause,

and develops solutions to a wide variety of bridge construction issues, defects, deterioration, and damage. Ensures

compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact

with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments;

however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Transportation Engineer III

Salary Grade - B26 - $72,886 - $108,666

Performs advanced and complex bridge and structural engineering work in the functional area of bridge construction

and maintenance at the Bridge Division. The engineer is familiar with construction specifications, materials, and bridge

standards in support of statewide bridge construction. The engineer diagnoses and performs structural analyses of

problems, determines cause, and develops solutions to a wide variety of bridge construction issues, defects, deterioration,

and damage. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines.

Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work

plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Transportation Engineer IV

Salary Grade - B27 - $80,174 - $115,000

Performs highly advanced and complex bridge and structural engineering work in the functional area of bridge construction

and maintenance at the Bridge Division. The engineer is familiar with construction specifications, materials, and bridge

standards in support of statewide bridge construction. The engineer diagnoses and performs structural analyses of

problems, determines cause, and develops solutions to a wide variety of bridge construction issues, defects, deterioration,

and damage. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines.

Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising

and assume direct accountability for the work product.

The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the

applicant's work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Essential Duties:

Transportation Engineer I

  • Answers technical and policy questions related to bridge inspection and maintains bridge inspection data; analyzes data

    and provides summaries.
  • Assists in performing structural review of complex forming, false work and erection details.
  • Assists in reviewing shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures.
  • Assists in the development of specifications for special bridge design details and projects.
  • Inspects structures for impact damage or construction problems and may design emergency shoring to prevent collapse

    of damaged structures.
  • Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
  • Performs engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and

    contracts.
  • Performs inspections, structural evaluations and analyses of bridges and related structures that have appraisal and

    condition ratings or are recommended for closure.
  • Performs moderately complex structural analysis of bridge designs.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Transportation Engineer II

  • All of the above and:
  • Assists districts with bridge inspection-related matters.
  • Reviews shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures.
  • Schedules, assigns and oversees bridge construction inspection activities.
  • Performs complex structural analysis of bridge designs.
  • Rates and monitors load carrying capacities of bridges.
  • Recommends bridge replacement, bridge rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges.


Transportation Engineer III

  • All of the above and:
  • Performs highly complex structural analysis of bridge designs.
  • Performs structural review of complex forming, false work and erection details.
  • Resolves differences between contractors and inspectors.


Transportation Engineer IV

  • All of the above and:
  • Develops or reviews engineering related documents, correspondence, reports and remediation plans.
  • Recommends prioritization of bridge replacement, bridge rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges.
  • Reviews shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: (all levels): Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX

PELS.

Experience:

Transportation Engineer I: 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience

(Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).

Transportation Engineer II: 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience

(Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).

Transportation Engineer III: 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience

(Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).

Transportation Engineer IV: 7 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience

(Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).

Substitutions: Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Licensed Prof Engineer*

*Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas,

must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional

engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that

effect as a condition of employment.

Transportation Engineer IV

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Climbing and Balancing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
  • Stooping, Kneeling and Crouching - bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist or knees, resting on

    knees
  • Talking and Hearing - expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words at normal speaking levels, communicating orally
