Why does the job exist?
For construction crews, inspect roadways and bridges. Learn how to test concrete, take densities. Will train in the District lab.
How does it get done?
Candidates will develop skills in the following areas:
Learn NMDOT specifications.
Learn real-life problem-solving skills, support engineering staffs, other staff and consultants/contractors to ensure projects are delivered on time and on budget.
Gain effective people management skills.
Review and provide guidance on allocation of limited staff resources for multiple projects at different locations throughout District One. Review all policies and or procedural documents in regards to sound engineering judgment and ethics which are in the best interest of District One.
Review date for compliance with performance measure related to federal and state funding requirements. Analyze data to ensure the at infrastructure will meet the needs of the public and encourage economic growth.
Who are the customers?
District One staff, traveling public and pedestrians.
Ideal Candidate
Desired degree or course work in Civil Engineering that may include:
ENGR 190 Introduction to Engineering Mathematics.
SUR 222 Introduction to Geomatics.
ET 109 Computer Drafting Fundamentals.
CE 151 Introduction to Civil Engineering.
CE 356 Fundamentals to Environmental Engineering.
CE 382 Hydraulic and Hydrologic Engineering.
CE 471 Transportation Engineering.
CE 479 Pavement Analysis and Design.
CE 483 Surface Water Hydrology.
Minimum Qualification
Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university OR completion of at least four semesters (or equivalent) at an accredited college or university within the last two (2) years.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions -hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow; insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; exposure to temperatures up to 300 degrees; high speed/high volume traffic and loud noises; subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; standing for extended periods of time or walking long distances for inspection of paving operations; hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also be performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours on short notice; willingness to accept change of geographical assignments; interaction with the public.
