GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, to oversee and supervise the collection of solid waste routes and the removal of brush and bulky items from alleys, curb sides or other designated areas.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Functions as a front line supervisor over assigned section personnel.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Supervise and assign the work of refuse collection crews in designated areas.

Demonstrate proper collection methods and practices, including work safety techniques.

Assist in the designing of collection routes; evaluate collection crew performance and workloads; make recommendations; provide data and prepare reports.

Inspect refuse collection routes and conditions of containers.

Establish new service, provide customer service, and answer customer complaints. Monitor customer adherence to collection procedures and requirements.

Train new employees on equipment operation and route requirements.

Check refuse trucks for proper maintenance and cleanliness.

Investigate accidents, injuries, and reported safety hazards.

Operate a City vehicle daily to travel to various work sites.

OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES

In the absence of the Supervisor, performs required supervisory functions.

Perform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Customer service skills including effective communication and public speaking.

Principles, practices, and occupational hazards and safety precautions for high volume customer/vehicle areas.

The principles and practices of safe driving.

Skill to:

Operate and care for a variety of tools, materials, and equipment used in the collection of refuse material.

Safely operate a motor vehicle.

Ability to:

Learn specialized tasks from technical manuals.

Read, write, and maintain accurate records.

Speak clearly when demonstrating proper procedures and conveying center policies.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels. Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:

Experience:

Two (2) years of experience in performing manual work; using small hand/power tools; using heavy machinery, and in operating refuse collection vehicles is required.

One (1) year of experience in a lead worker or supervisory role is preferred.

Education/Training:

A high school diploma or GED is required.

License or Certificate:

A valid Texas Class B CDL is required.

Special Requirements:

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:

Bloodborne Pathogens training, HazCom training, and HIPAA Compliance training are required within Sixty (60) days of employment.

Exposure to noise, outdoors, vibration, chemicals, and electrical hazards.

Ability to work overtime and work weekends.
