The Beeville Maintenance Section is looking for a Crew Chief who wants to combine their leadership skills with their knowledge and expertise of skilled transportation maintenance to lead a team of Transportation Maintenance Technicians. Position Description

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

  • Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs, and organize response of crews
  • Assists in administration of the maintenance section
  • Assists with surveying-related work.
  • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments
  • Inspects roads while in route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors
  • Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors
  • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
  • Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials
  • Operates light and heavy equipment
  • Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment
  • Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience: 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

      • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
      • Must have a Class "A" CDL with "N" Tank endorsement

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Works frequently in small/crawl spaces; manholes; areas that can cause claustrophobia
  • Works in narrow aisles or passageways
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels;receive information by oral communication
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
  • Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

  • Required to work weekends and holidays
  • Required to work hours other than 8-5.
  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
  • A mathematical simulation will be part of the interview process.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
