Job Description

Under the direction of the Director of Nursing Education, with some degree of latitude, the Director of BHA Academy Training is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of training programs across NYC Health + Hospitals. This role focuses on training staff in Behavioral Health Assistant (BHA) Academy techniques and strategies based on the principles set forth in the NYS Office of Mental Health PMCS/TRUST training manual. This position also encompasses significant managerial responsibilities, including oversight of the training team and coordination with various departments to ensure training goals are met.

General tasks and responsibilities will include:

Training:
  • Design and implement a comprehensive teaching plan with clear strategies and resources to achieve educational goals.
  • Oversee the rollout of educational initiatives, ensuring alignment with system-wide objectives.
  • Cultivate a supportive learning environment that encourages positive interactions and professional growth.
  • Conduct BHA Academy and Refresher programs, providing tailored feedback to enhance staff competency.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of training sessions and modify strategies to improve learning outcomes.

Coaching:
  • Act as a mentor to newly appointed BHA Supervisors, guiding them in effective management and leadership strategies.
  • Provide ongoing support to BHAs, helping them to identify and leverage their strengths, and address areas for improvement.
  • Regularly assess the performance of both new and experienced BHAs, offering constructive feedback and advice.

Leadership:
  • Establish key objectives for classes
  • Answer BHA questions and provide support to ensure completion of the program
  • Record BHA attendance
  • Responsible for class enrollment and attendance

Administrative:
  • Manage the overall schedule for BHA Academy training sessions across the organization.
  • Liaise with facility stakeholders to streamline staff registration and ensure broad participation.
  • Coordinate the logistics of training events, including venue setup and distribution of materials.
  • Monitor and report on training quality, ensuring compliance with state-approved curricula.
  • Resolve scheduling conflicts, and maintain open lines of communication with all involved parties.

Managerial:
  • Supervise facility training instructors, providing direction and support to ensure the successful execution of training programs.
  • Develop and manage the training budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.
  • Conduct performance evaluations for training staff, setting goals and expectations to drive excellence.
  • Foster a collaborative team environment, encouraging professional development and continuous learning among staff.
  • Collaborate with senior management to align training objectives with organizational goals and priorities.
  • Lead initiatives to innovate and enhance training methodologies and materials


Minimum Qualifications
1. A Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or university in Education, Public Health, Psychology, Personnel Administration, Management or Public Administration or a related approved discipline; and,
2. Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in planning and manpower development and training programs, medical or public health administration or other fields related to training, development and manpower analysis, of which at least three (3) years have been in a managerial, supervisory or administrative capacity related to the organization, formulation, development and implementation of such plans and programs; or,
3. A Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in Education, Management, Social Work, Medical Administration, Psychology, Personnel Administration, Public Administration or a related approved field, with seven (7) years of experience as described in item #2 and two (2) years in a managerial, supervisory or administrative capacity; and,
4. Extensive knowledge of the principles of training and manpower development programs and ability to analyze and determine the needs of the Corporation; or,
5. A satisfactory combination of training, education and experience indicating the ability to perform satisfactorily.

Department Preferences

  • To be certified by OMH in approved trainings within one year of start date
  • One year of experience in employee development and training programs in a health care facility, business, educational, governmental organization or other fields related to training, development and analysis, or training in implementation of operational or management systems
  • Knowledge of the principles of training, psychology of learning, applications and the ability to instruct and motivate; and
  • Ability to communicate orally and relate to others; and
  • Proficient writing and research skills; or
  • A satisfactory combination of education, training and experience indicating the ability to perform satisfactorily.
  • Minimum of 3 years working in behavioral health or social services
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work in teams
  • Demonstration of sensitivity to persons with a psychiatric diagnosis who exhibit challenging behaviors
  • Demonstration of potential to effectively present information and teach/demonstrate skills to others in a classroom situation
  • Demonstrated superior skills as a direct care staff in Psychiatry especially in areas of verbal calming skills with patients diagnosed with psychiatric conditions.
  • Experience in using audio-visual technology (computer/LCD, PowerPoint, etc.) for educational delivery
  • Ability to create a dynamic learning environment ensuring BHA's achieve the necessary skills mandated by the course curricula and course objectives
  • Evaluate employee's performance by verifying their understanding of the course material, competency in learned skills, and ability to demonstrate applied knowledge
