Job Description

The Director of Nursing is an integral member of the Nursing and Patient Care Services Administration. The Director of Nursing work under the supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer or a designee, he/she assumes administrative responsibilities and clinical oversight for Patient Care Services and is responsible for developing systems and processes for the delivery of clinical care and day to day operations and is responsible for managing the department's activities, including clinical quality improvement, developing and implementing standardized tools, roles and systems to support and for establishing the metrics and achieving targets for care to meet regulatory requirements, system goals, and local hospital goals. The Director creates, strategy, structure and standardization of leading practice services in order to achieve clinical and operational excellence, and to support organizational financial sustainability while promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and fostering teamwork. His/her responsibilities are carried out within the framework of the Hospital By-Laws, the Mission and Vision statements, policies and procedures, all regulatory (TJC, NYSDOH, NYCDOAH and professional organizational standards.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • The Director of Nursing will coordinate all patient care and operational activities and has twenty-four (24) hour responsibility for patient care areas.
  • Promotes a positive and pleasant attitude conducive to the workplace, which promotes customer service and enhances and furthers the hospital's Mission, Vision and Value statement.
  • Patient Care Management/Unit Operations
  • Collaborates with other Directors of Nursing in planning and developing programs to improve patient care and employee performance.
  • Periodically monitors employee's performance relative to patient care and nursing practice, e.g. compliance to policy/procedures relative to patient care assignments and the related documentation, narcotic count, code cart assessment sheet, medication administration and documentation, etc.
  • Communicates patient care and service related problems on the tour to appropriate individuals timely. Assists in corrective actions/follow-up.
  • Makes frequent, purposeful rounds with/without Nurse Managers of service to assess units.
  • Evaluates staffing plan and ensures that staffing is adequate to meet patient care needs.
  • Collaborates with peers and Assistant Directors of Nursing in developing mechanisms that improves continuous feedback relative to the current status of patient care/nursing practice issues in order to comply with hospital policy/procedure, regulatory agency mandates and standards.
  • Additional responsibilities assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State; and,
2. A Master's Degree in Nursing Administration or an equivalent field or Doctorate Degree in Nursing preferred., and a minimum of four years of high-level responsible experience in nursing administration, three years of which shall have been in a hospital; or,
3. A satisfactory equivalent. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.
4. Certification in Nursing Critical Care or Nursing Administration preferred.
