Job Summary:
The Emergency General Surgery (EGS) Program Manager (EPM) provides oversight and program support, including but not limited to maintaining a collaborative relationship with the EGS Medical Director (EMD) with the goal of fulfilling and maintaining the verification criteria put forth by the American College of Surgeons EGS Program. The EPM is responsible for assistance with development and implementation of various policies and guidelines prioritized by the EMD and EGS faculty, assuring accurate abstraction of patient data into the EGS registry, for running the quality improvement (QI) program and supporting research interests related to surgical critical care and EGS. Management of administrative functions will include educational initiatives for nursing and other allied health care providers and oversight of the responsibilities of any mid-levels and nurses that may be assigned specifically to the EGS service line. As a teaching institution, the role may also call for the active engagement of residents and medical students in the day-to-day operations.

Education:
Required:
Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing. ASN degree required.

Preferred:
BSN or Master's Degree

Experience:
Required:
A minimum of 5 years of nursing experience appropriate to the specialty of trauma/surgery with ICU and/or ED nursing experience. Must have experience caring for surgery patients. A minimum of 2 years management experience or equivalent. QI/QA and discharge planning experience. Demonstrated expertise in personnel and resource management.

Preferred:
5 years of management experience. Previous quality/case management experience. Advanced certification preferred.

Position Requirement(s): License/Certification/Registration
Required:
o Current license to practice nursing in the state of Tennessee must be in good standing with the TN Board of Nursing.
o Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and maintained going forward.

The Nurse Licensure Compact will not change how to obtain or renew a Tennessee license. However, the Tennessee nursing license will be a single state license for Tennessee Residents or non-compact state residents. Tennessee licensure or multistate licensure from a compact state must be obtained within three months of hire for non-Tennessee residents.

Preferred:
o Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) instructor.
o Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) instructor
o Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) certification
o Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification

Job Summary:
Essential functions of the EGS Program Manager position include:
Develop, implement and evaluate Emergency General Surgery services.
Assist in the development of surgical strategic plan.
Develop, implement and evaluate policies, procedures, performance improvement activities, clinical management guidelines, and CME compliance as per the ACS EGS Program.
Collaboration with the EGS Medical Director and supporting clinicians for developing, reviewing and analyzing institutional surgical filters
Determines variances by filter and core measure and assures follow-up resolution or monitoring for trends
Ensure quality of data as well as timely submissions to state and national reporting entities.
Participate in development, implementation, and evaluation of the surgical critical care service procedures, performance improvement activities, and clinical management guidelines as it pertains to emergency general surgery patients.
Establish and maintain the provision of outstanding customer service as a performance expectation for all staff.
Initiate actions, new approaches, policies, and programs to facilitate continual improvement of surgical services.
Establish a presence of leadership and develop effective working relationships with administration and medical, hospital and nursing staff.
Establish increased presence in the community on a local, regional, and national level as evidenced by increased participation on committees and attendance at meetings.
Manage daily operations in a systematic manner to improve operational effectiveness and ensure quality of services.
Demonstrate/model the hospital's core values and customer service behaviors in interactions with all customers (internal and external).
Provide necessary oversight and run the QI program.
Support research efforts related to surgical critical care and EGS.
Ensure collaborative relationship with medical students and residents as the role may dictate.
Provide necessary oversight for focused peer review when indicated by quality measures.
