Under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor), The Fish and Wildlife (F&W) Scientific Aid will conduct boat-based juvenile Salmon surveys on the Lower Sacramento River near Knights Landing. The incumbent will navigate boats, prepare field gear, collect biological and environmental data, and handle and identify Sacramento River fish species while adhering to safety protocols. Additionally, the F&W Scientific Aid will assist staff with entering data, conducting Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC), summarizing data, and other related office or lab tasks.

The Scientific Aid will be responsible for preparing field gear prior to daily field studies, checking written data sheets from field surveys, entering data in Excel or Access, and conducting quality control checks on entered data. May also conduct data analysis on fish quantities, size distribution, environmental parameters as well as calibrating and maintaining equipment.

The incumbent will assist with data entry, photocopying, filing, and scanning documents related to anadromous fishery monitoring.

Working Conditions
Fieldwork will be conducted in the Lower Sacramento River near Knights Landing. Field surveys require boating and working in swift water in year-round inclement weather conditions. The position will require working outdoors for extended amounts of time on a boat under a variety of weather conditions that may include swimming, wading, or hiking. Office space will be provided at the Rancho Cordova office for data entry quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) and assisting with anadromous fishery documents. This position requires possession of a valid Driver's License. This position requires the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff on certain occasions. Occasional travel is required within the state of California via private or public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.). Travel may include overnight stays. Must be able to deploy with short notice for extended periods (up to 7 days) that may include overnight stay.

Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

• Familiarity with the fundamentals of fish and wildlife management and ecology and general concepts principles involved in the departmental assignment.
• Familiarity with biology of California fishes and the use of standard fish sampling equipment.
• Experience operating boats and towing and maneuvering trailers.
• College coursework and/or experience in ichthyology, fisheries, or zoology and career interests in fisheries biology.
• Motor Operator Training Course/Motorboat Operator Certification Course certification is a plus.
• Ability to make and record accurate laboratory and field observations.
• Have an understanding of fish and wildlife regulations and explain their purpose to the public
• Willingness to work irregular hours including weekends and holidays; willingness to do routine work to learn; interest in and aptitude for the work.
• Physical strength and agility; ability to swim 50 yards and stay afloat at least five minutes; ability to lift 40 pounds.
• Possess good communication skills, get along well with others, and work in small groups for extended periods of time. Ability to interact with the public and maintain a high level of professional integrity.
