Under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor), the incumbent will be responsible for conducting fish salvage operations on the Wallace Weir Fish Collection Facility to monitor anadromous fishery resources. Assist with daily operations at the Wallace Weir Fish Collection Facility. This will include checking the facility for fish and debris while keeping the facility clean and functioning, as well as measuring and recording environmental parameters (water temperature, velocity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, depth, etc.).

Duties will include identification and enumeration of captured fish, measuring, sex identification, determining adipose fin clip status, taking genetic samples from target species (Chinook Salmon, Steelhead, Green and White Sturgeon), assisting with and conducting tagging of target species, and recording data onto paper data sheets. Target species will also be relocated to a release site using a truck and trailer mounted transport tank. The incumbent will be responsible for preparing field gear prior to daily field duties, checking written data sheets from field surveys, entering data into an Excel or Access based database, and conducting quality checks on entered data.

The incumbent may also conduct preliminary data analysis on fish quantities, size, distribution, environmental parameters, and calibration and maintenance of equipment.
The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions
Field work will be conducted in the Knights Landing Ridge Cut Slough near the Yolo Bypass. Conditions on site can range from cold, windy, rainy, and muddy to hot, dry, and dusty. Most of the field work will be conducted at the fish collection facility with flat, hard surfaces and heavy equipment and machinery, but may also be conducted in areas involving wading in shallow water with rocky, uneven, slippery and or muddy terrain. Office space will be provided at the Rancho Cordova North Central Region Head Quarter's Office for data entry Quality Assurance/ Quality Control and assisting with anadromous fishery documents. This position requires possession of a valid Driver's License. This position requires the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff on certain occasions. Occasional overnight travel may be required.

Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

• Familiarity with the fundamentals of fish and wildlife management and ecology and general concepts principles involved in the departmental assignment.
• Familiarity with biology of California fishes and the use of standard fish sampling equipment.
• Experience towing and maneuvering trailers.
• College coursework and/or experience in ichthyology, fisheries, or zoology and career interests in fisheries biology.
• Motor Operator Training Course/Motorboat Operator Certification Course certification is a plus.
• Ability to make and record accurate laboratory and field observations.
• Have an understanding of fish and wildlife regulations and explain their purpose to the public.
