Scientific Aid

Incumbent performs and/or assists with abundance surveys and mortality monitoring of mule deer in San Diego and Orange Counties. Survey and monitoring methods may include but are not limited to aerial mark-resight, ground capture-recapture, double count, and ground telemetry monitoring of radio-collared (marked) deer. Data collected through surveys and telemetry monitoring shall be used to determine population (demographic) status and trends, recruitment rates, abundance, distribution, fawn survival and buck:doe ratios. Field research shall be conducted through use of telemetry monitoring, GPS location data downloads, and mortality investigation and necropsy to obtain information related to the above topics.

Coordinate and work as part of a team with personnel from other agencies on field activities, data collection, and habitat evaluation and enhancement. Participate in other project activities as needed. Prepare and load equipment and supplies necessary for field trips. Maintain field equipment and field vehicles. Conduct periodic inventories of field supplies and equipment; maintain equipment schedules.

The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions
Office will be located in San Diego. Wildlife survey, field monitoring, and capture may require working long days (over 8 hours), weekends and holidays, walking on uneven surfaces and working in adverse weather conditions.

Special Requirements

Must be able to operate 4WD vehicles, digital equipment, computers, mapping equipment, and to carry, operate and hike with a 25-30 pound backpack.

Comprehension of natural resource management and wildlife conservation practices, good writing, communication, and organizational skills, ability to keep accurate records and experience in the following: natural resource field-based work, conducting population surveys and analysis of survey and monitoring data, using computer-based statistical programs, performing natural resource GIS research and analysis.
