The California Department of Fish and Wildlife welcomes applications for a Scientific Aid position focused on supporting the white abalone restoration project. The position will assist staff and participate in SCUBA diving fieldwork to survey established sites throughout Southern California for juvenile abalone and other marine invertebrates and provide dive support for juvenile and adult white abalone restoration stocking efforts.
Other duties include:

Assist with preparation and planning of white abalone project fieldwork, including filling SCUBA tanks, packing and cleaning field gear, supporting boat cleaning and maintenance, and occasionally building field materials.

Assist staff in editing, entering, summarizing, and reporting data for various aspects of white abalone project fieldwork, including data entry and management of databases for habitat and species survey data collected during fieldwork.

Assist staff with writing project progress and final reports for the Department's federal white abalone grant funding source, NOAA Section 6, including generating figures and writing project results in a scientific paper format. Assist staff and participate in other work conducted by external organizations associated with the broader White Abalone Restoration Consortium (WARC) and the white abalone captive rearing program.

Assist with captive program spawning and husbandry work as needed, tagging, and sampling studies related to white abalone recovery.

Assist staff in conducting education and outreach activities to better inform the public about the need for white abalone restoration and the progress being made in the white abalone restoration program.

Perform miscellaneous administrative tasks, including gear and supply inventory, supporting purchasing, and submitting paperwork.

The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions
Working locations include office, remote, and outdoor fieldwork settings.

Working days can vary from week to week depending on fieldwork needs and deadlines. Computer-based work requires the use of a computer keyboard for several hours a day, which is done either remotely or in an office. Position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule depending on operational needs.

In-person duties include transporting and maintaining field equipment and traveling to various field sites throughout Southern California. Occasional overnight and weekend travel may be required within the state of California via private or public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.)

Travel may include overnight stays which may be extended up to 3 days. Fieldwork days can be long (>10 hours) and involves boat-based work which can have variable conditions and be physically and mentally arduous.

Fieldwork and diving occurs on small boats ranging in size from 21 ft. to 45 ft and occasional handling of live and dead fish and invertebrates. Interaction with members of the public in a professional manner may be required.

Moving and loading of SCUBA tanks is frequent, which requires the ability to lift and move at least 50 lbs.

Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to successfully complete the Departments scientific diver training. The position will require Department SCUBA diver authorization.
  • Possession of a Rescue SCUBA certification or equivalent.
  • The ideal candidate will have American Academy of Underwater Sciences scientific diver (AAUS or equivalent) or at a minimum.
  • Able to lift and move at least 50 lbs.
