THE DEPARTMENT

The primary functions of the Kinesiology and Health Promotion Department are:
  1. To provide the highest quality and up-to-date instruction in a broad range of topics at the undergraduate level.
  2. To advance kinesiology and health promotion knowledge through research and creative scholarly and professional activities.
  3. And to serve the university, local, and global communities.

The Department serves over 730 undergraduate and 30 graduate majors, including 13 tenure-track faculty and 20 temporary faculty. It also has two administrative support and two technical staff members who, in collaboration with the Chair and faculty, carry out the department's teaching mission.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Facilities & Equipment:
  • Maintain the facilities associated with KHP activity courses, e.g., weight room, aerobic room, tennis courts, outdoor activity spaces, and both gyms. Ensure equipment is clean, safe, and ready for student use.
  • Assist/Maintain/Serve as backup for the KHP teaching and research laboratories. Including, but not limited to, Body Comp Lab, Molecular Research Lab, Human Performance Lab, Mind and Heart Lab, Exercise Science Lab, and Motor Neuroscience Lab.
  • Maintain the challenge ropes course and Motor Development Clinic (MDC) space.
  • Ensure that the KHP teaching and research facilities are appropriately used and secured when not in use.
  • Assist the Instructional Support Tech II (IST II) with external suppliers, vendors, service contractors, and internal entities such as facilities and procurement.
  • Oversee equipment inventory management, survey off old equipment, and dispose of hazardous materials according to campus guidelines.
  • Help plan, coordinate, and oversee facility laboratory/classroom/office remodels for the department.

Operations & Instructional Support:
  • Ensure that KHP activity courses have appropriate supplies and equipment available (pre-set-up and/or checkout) and that assistance is provided during scheduled classes.
  • Handle student inquiries and equipment check-in/out for activity courses. Assist with troubleshooting for equipment.
  • Develop and implement procedures for providing equipment, materials, and supplies for instructional purposes.
  • Assist IST II with purchases (requisitions, P-card) for supplies and equipment.
  • Review/renew service contracts and make routine repairs to equipment as necessary.
  • Support instructors with training on equipment for the activity courses, and support faculty and students with the challenge ropes course and MDC.
  • Assist IST II in scheduling secondary spaces when requested by faculty and students.

Student Assistants
  • Assist IST II with the interviewing, hiring, and scheduling of student assistants to meet the department's needs.
  • Assist IST II with providing instruction in equipment care, use, and maintenance.


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of principles of providing support services; knowledge of the common principles, methods, and techniques related to the discipline; knowledge of the materials, supplies, and equipment and their uses related to the discipline.
  • Ability to evaluate the materials and supplies used; ability to learn to adjust and make minor repairs on scientific equipment; ability to operate scientific or highly technical equipment and to interpret results; ability to plan activities and prepare schedules; ability to use methods, techniques, and skills related to the discipline in preparing specialized materials.
  • Equivalent to two years of experience providing instructional support services for a unit or discipline, acting as a student assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline.

OR
  • Equivalent to two years of college with 16-semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

OR
  • Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a related discipline may be substituted for the experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience and knowledge of kinesiology lab and activity equipment (DXA, Biodex, In-Body, EKG, metabolic carts/treadmills, etc.) is preferred.
  • Two (2) years of experience providing instructional support services for a unit or discipline, acting as a student assistant, or producing materials or supplies related to the discipline.
