About the Position:

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire an Occupational Safety Lead Compliance Officer at State Police Headquarters in North Chesterfield. This position develops, coordinates, monitors, and manages the safety and environment compliance programs for the Department of the State Police to include, but may not be limited to fire prevention, safety, health, hazardous material communication, and occupational safety regulations and carried out in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)/Virginia Occupational Safety and Health (VOSH). The person in this position will work to reduce injuries to all persons, and work to mitigate the high costs of Workers' Compensation and State liability for injuries in accordance with Department policies and procedures; will conduct workplace safety investigations of all injuries and workplace fatalities for causal factors and prevention methods; will instruct employees in proper fit testing of protective respiratory masks and suits; will monitor and advise Department employees on issues concerning OSHA/VOSH safety requirements and exposure to harmful and/or hazardous materials; and will maintain professional certifications and any required recertifications.

Minimum Qualifications

•Considerable knowledge of occupational safety and health standards, industrial hygiene fundamentals, and safety equipment; and of federal, State, and local codes, statues, regulations, and standards related to workplace safety.
•Working knowledge of environmental protective equipment and apparatuses; and of inspection and accident investigation techniques.
•Skill in operating computers to include using Microsoft software applications, and the operation of applicable environmental testing equipment and apparatuses.
•Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing in English as well as the ability to make oral presentations to untrained and professional audiences comprising all levels of Agency employees; to interpret and apply State statutes, Code of Regulations, laws, standards, regulatory and Agency policies, procedures and guidelines; to gather data and compile technical statistical reports; and to interpret and apply technical procedures, standards and laws applicable to voluntary compliance safety enforcement training.
•Experience with OSHA, VOSH, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) regulations.
•High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
•Valid Virginia Operator License required.
•Occasional overnight travel required.
•Occasional after-hours emergency calls may occur.

Additional Considerations

•OSHA certification preferred.
•Instructor certification for American Red Cross Heartsaver Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillators (AED), National Safety Council Standard First Aid preferred.
