We touch everyday activities of every New Mexican, while ensuring a fair and prompt administrative process to help spur economic development. The Department certifies and regulates more than 450,000 individuals and business that fall into the following divisions: Alcohol Beverage Control; Cannabis Control; Construction Industries; Manufactured Housing; Financial Institutions; Boards and Commissions and Securities. The Office of the General Counsel provides legal support for the Superintendent and the boards/commissions directly under the authority of the Superintendent.
Why does the job exist?
This position will be assigned to assist the Office of General Counsel. Provide general legal research and litigation support to the Deputy General Counsel, Chief General Counsel and the Office of the Superintendent, with an emphasis on the Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA) compliance and legal support for the Office of the Superintendent as well as the the boards/commission directly under the authority of the Superintendent.
How does it get done?
This position often works independently on projects as assigned, but may also work in conjunction with the law clerk or other administrative staff as required. Work is primarily performed on site in the Santa Fe office of the Regulation and Licensing Department. Legal research is most often performed utilizing computerized data systems. IPRA compliance duties involve the handling of records in both electronic and hard copy format. Litigation support duties often require direct in person meetings with attorneys, staff and the members of the boards/commissions under the direct authority of the Superintendent. Contract support involves review and drafting of contracts and memorandum of understanding. Legislative support involves researching bill drafts and compiling information for Fiscal Impact Reports. Limited travel may be necessary to attend meetings or for litigation support. Other duties as assigned.
Who are the customers?
Position is directly supervised by the Deputy General Counsel, who directs the majority of this position's work. Work is also performed for the Chief General Counsel, the Deputy Superintendent and the Superintendent as necessary.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in processing requests for public records pursuant to the Inspection of Public Records Act, providing litigation support, word processing utilizing Microsoft Office, performing legal research, drafting legal documents, researching and tracking legislative bills and knowledge of regulatory and administrative law hearing procedures and processes.
Minimum Qualification
Associate's degree in Paralegal Studies and two (2) years of experience drafting and preparing legal correspondence, conducting legal research and maintaining a case management/tracking system. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.
