Position Summary



The Respiratory Pediatric Program Coordinator is a Respiratory Care Practitioner acting as an expert practitioner in the Outpatient Specialty Center/Pediatric Pulmonary Clinic. His/Her intuition and skill is derived from a comprehensive knowledge base thoroughly grounded in clinical experience in pediatric pulmonary disease processes and treatment. The Respiratory Pediatric Program Coordinator is characterized by a flexible, innovative, confident and self-directed approach to patient and family care. Complex patient care situations challenge this RCP to reach his/her full potential. Ethical reasoning and decision making is evident. This RCP has a vision of what is clinically possible and is well versed in best practices, clinical care guidelines and current research in pediatric pulmonary diseases. The Respiratory Pediatric Program Coordinator is system-savvy and understands the interdependence of disciplines and departments, and directs situations to maximize patient outcomes. This RCP is a positive force in the advancement of professional practice and quality of patient care.



Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job

  • Provides expert patient care in spirometry testing, home ventilation, tracheostomies, airway clearance, disease management, patient and family education. Serves as a clinical resource to other Respiratory Care Practitioners, member of the interprofessional team and physicians. Role models and directs others to correct LBMC standards of practice, policies, procedures, protocols, evidence-based practice and guidelines for patient care. Participates in multidisciplinary meetings and conferences.
  • Provides expert diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to evaluate patients by using equipment appropriately in the delivery of patient care. Constantly decontaminates equipment and supplies according to department policies and procedures. Follows established procedures for maintaining quality assurance, including manual and automated calibration checks of equipment and the assessment of equipment errors, with the ability to troubleshoot and convey information appropriately to technical support representatives.
  • Explains tests, procedures and disease processes encompassing complex diagnoses seen in clinic to patient/family/significant other. Develops, adapts, and adjusts teaching strategies and teaching plan according to priorities and assessment of the learner needs. Assess barriers when patients are not meeting treatment goals or the following treatment care plan.
  • Actively identifies patients with healthcare associated infections by applying infection control policies and procedures consistently, including effective hand hygiene and utilizing personal protective equipment.
  • Identifies performance improvement issues relating to respiratory care practice. Participates in and coordinates opportunities to resolve or substantiate gaps in respiratory practice. Acts as a resource to ensure that identified problems are represented through unit specific channels and identifies solutions for unresolved problems. Acts as a consultant to staff members and the health care team in problem identification and solution. Participates in department and clinic improvement projects, policy development and review. Performs data collection for reporting to grant organizations and contributes to reports as required.
  • Performs accurate and timely documentation and billing for all interventions in the patient’s medical record consistent with scientific principle, standards of respiratory care practice and hospital policy.
  • Performs skills at 70% expert and 30% proficient. Validation of these competencies will be by direct observation, simulation and training.
  • Identifies and monitors trends in pediatric clinical respiratory practice consistent with scientific principles, current research, expertise, standards of respiratory care and hospital policy. Networks with other clinical and administrative leaders within community.
  • Supports and advances respiratory care practice through one or more of the following: participates as a conference speaker/presenter, presents to community groups, participates in professional organizations and activities, participates in scholarly activities, publishes in journals/newsletters.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Qualifications

Minimum Requirements



Qualifications/Work Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience in pediatric respiratory care required. Consideration will be made for an employee with strong education and associated experiential background.


Education/Licensure/Certification:

  • Graduate of an AMA accredited School for Respiratory Care
  • Bachelors degree in health related field preferred
  • Current CA RCP license
  • BCLS - Healthcare Provider, required
  • PALS, required
  • Certified Asthma Educator (AE-C) credential within 6 months of hire
  • Neonatal-Pediatric Specialist (NPS) advanced credential within one year of hire
  • Average skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
