DESCRIPTION

The Triton Underground Scholars Program Coordinator is responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering comprehensive programs and services that support the persistence, academic success, and graduation of undergraduate students who are formerly incarcerated and system-impacted. This role entails close collaboration with various campus partners and stakeholders to enhance retention and student success initiatives. The Triton Underground Scholars Program Coordinator reports to the OASIS Associate Director. By effectively carrying out the following responsibilities, the Triton Underground Scholars Program Coordinator will play a crucial role in supporting the academic success and holistic development of formerly incarcerated and system-impacted students at the university.

Key Responsibilities include designing and implementing programs that support the academic and personal success of formerly incarcerated and system-impacted students. Develop and administer workshops, seminars, and activities to promote student engagement, retention, and graduation. Establish program goals and objectives to align with the latest research and evidence-based practices. Provide personalized support and resources to students, addressing their unique needs and challenges. Offer retention counseling and outreach to students who are at risk or experiencing academic difficulties. The coordinator will forge strong relationships and partnerships with various campus stakeholders and community constituency groups, staff, program directors, administrators, faculty, alums, and system-impacted services and partners to administer and seamlessly deliver program services, put practices into action, and serve to engage robust student participation.

Recruit, select, train, supervise, and evaluate student staff and volunteers. Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices and research-based methodologies in student support and retention. Implement evidence-based strategies to improve program outcomes. Conduct research, plan, and administer student support programs using the latest evidence-based practices. Assess program effectiveness and make necessary adjustments to improve student support and retention. Advise organization management, departments, and academic programs about the unique needs of this student population. Consult with UCSD faculty and staff in developing retention strategies for underground scholars. Prepare reports on program outcomes and activities.

Establish and maintain liaison with other campus departments and off-campus agencies as appropriate. Participate in relevant training, conferences, and workshops. Stay informed about new research and trends in supporting formerly incarcerated and system-impacted students. Designs, develops, and implements retention activities based on the identified needs of program participants. Conducts activities to improve the campus climate for the target population.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area such as Counseling or Education with typically 3 - 4 years relevant experience and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development. **Experience in advising, counseling, and group facilitation in an educational setting with listening skills and the ability to respond effectively to concerns and problems, including difficult or unpleasant situations.
  • Knowledge in how to enhance students' intellectual and personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership. **Demonstrated ability to work successfully with multicultural and other non-traditional students. Ability to create and develop programs and activities tailored for formerly incarcerated and system impacted TUS participants.
  • Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as collaborative teaching / learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring, and advocacy. **Ability to deal effectively with a wide variety of individuals requiring excellent interpersonal skills, listening skills, and communication skills in order to convince, influence, and direct students as it relates to their academic goals.
  • Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under prepared students in higher education. **In particular, as they relate to formerly incarcerated, and system impacted. Professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting this student population.
  • Knowledge and experience in analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of students. **General understanding of financial aid regulations and procedures.
  • Knowledge and experience in researching, compiling and analyzing data, and generating reports. **Knowledge of needs assessment methodology with the ability to interpret data to determine program effectiveness. Experience collecting, analyzing, and evaluating data, as well as developing verbal and written presentations and reports regarding assessment of the data collected.
  • Knowledge of research methodologies and research designs. **Prior professional experience with program development, implementation, assessment, and reporting. Ability to keep accurate records and analyze data to determine program effectiveness.
  • Knowledge of and experience in conflict management and intervention strategies.
  • Proven interpersonal skills. Ability to be sensitive, diplomatic, tactful, patient, flexible, and helpful with diverse populations. Demonstrated skills in clear and effective communication. Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen and ability to build and maintain effective relationships at all levels within the University and outside agencies. Skills to recognize problems requiring specialized attention to handle complex, sensitive, and confidential issues.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.
  • Ability to create and develop programs and activities tailored for formerly incarcerated and system impacted TUS participants. Previous experience working with formerly incarcerated, and system impacted individuals. Experience providing programming, advising and outreach for low-income, first generation, and/or underrepresented students.
  • Previous experience in training and supervising student staff.
  • Demonstrated ability and skill in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive, and enterprise systems involving data processing, word processing, recordkeeping, online applications, communication technology (including print, video, and social media).
  • Ability to work independently or as a member of a team and follow through on assignments with minimal direction and supervision. Ability to contribute effectively to the accomplishment of team goals and objectives.
  • Ability to make presentations to both large and small groups.
  • Possess skills to encourage and motivate others.
  • Skill or experience in managing program budgets and expense tracking.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $63,800 - $111,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $30.56 - $53.45

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
