Job Description

BACKGROUND:
New York City Health + Hospitals is the largest public health care system in the country and serves 1.3 million New Yorkers, nearly 400,000 of whom are uninsured. It provides medical and mental health services through its 11 acute care hospitals, four skilled nursing facilities, six large diagnostic and treatment centers and more than 80 community-based clinics.
NYC Health + Hospitals is seeking a psychologist to be an integral part of an interdisciplinary, facility-based lifestyle medicine program. The lifestyle program is designed to help adult patients living with chronic cardiometabolic conditions adopt healthy lifestyle changes across the pillars of nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, social connections, and avoidance of risky substances. Clinical criteria for referral include atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, hypertension, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and/or health concerns related to obesity. The psychologist will provide psychological support to patients in the program and work closely with the program's medical providers, registered dietitian, health coach, coordinator, and community health workers.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provides psychological evaluation and support to patients engaging in intensive therapeutic lifestyle change.
• Addresses psychopathology, body image, self-esteem, social support, quality of life.
• Evaluates and provides therapy for conditions that include, but are not limited to, anxiety, depression, PTSD or other history of trauma, and disordered eating. Services will be anchored in the context of lifestyle medicine and plant-based nutrition.
• Creates safe, therapeutic environment for patients with obesity and other chronic health conditions.
• Utilizes motivational interviewing techniques to support lifestyle change.
• Participates in development of treatment plans in coordination with medical provider, registered dietitian, and health coach.
• Develops differential diagnoses for patients and ensures proper referral to MD for medication evaluations as needed.
• Coordinates with psychiatrist when needed in managing patient's overall care.
• Participates and leads various group meetings, including but not limited to emotional eating, mindfulness, stress reduction, body image, and support groups.
• Provides documentation of clinical services as per departmental guidelines.
• Assists with case management needs for a complex population that faces many barriers in the community.
• Participates in continuing education and/or other appropriate activities to maintain current licensure.
• Undergoes training in nutrition and lifestyle medicine as offered by the program.
• Through attendance at workshops, conferences and seminars, keeps up to date on
a. Emerging advances in psychological care of patients engaging in intensive lifestyle change
b. Psychological theory, treatment and testing approaches designed to maintain and/or increase population-specific therapeutic and diagnostic assessment skills
• Supervises psychology interns and externs, Level I psychologists as assigned by the Director of Psychology.
• Participates in psychology staff meetings and educational functions.
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

SPECIAL NOTE # = Additional Requirements for Assignment Level II (Effective September 25, 1998)
A. A Doctoral Degree in clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, School Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Clinical Health Psychology or Neuro-Psychology, awarded upon completion of a Doctoral Program in Psychology registered by the New York State Department of Education and designated as licensure qualifying; and
B. One additional year of satisfactory full-time experience, either as a Psychologist for the City of New York, or in a supervisory capacity in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, School Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Clinical Health Psychology or Neuro-Psychology in an approved agency or institution. Employees who complete their Doctoral Degree requirements on or after October 1, 1992 must have at least one year of qualifying experience gained after the completion of all Doctoral Degree requirements; and

* Effective September 25, 1998, appointments to Assignment Level II require 1) a Ph.D. as outlined in A above; and 2) one year of qualifying experience as outlined in B above.
C. License Requirements for Assignment Level II
1. In the New York City Departments of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and
Alcoholism Services, Police and Fire, and those programs functionally transferred to the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation from the New York City Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Alcoholism Services, a valid license as a Psychologist issued by the New York State Department of Education.
2. In agencies not noted in C. (1.) above, a valid license as a Psychologist issued by the New York State Department of Education within one year of the date of assignment. At the discretion of the appointing agency, the period to obtain the license may be extended for up to six months for employees who fail to obtain the license within one year of their assignment. Once obtained, this license must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.

EDUCATIONAL LEVEL{QRs}:
A Doctoral degree in Psychology from an APA accredited program or an accredited program recognized by the Department of Education of the State of New York

KNOWLEDGEABLE IN:
• Psychological needs of patients with obesity, a history of disordered eating and/or trauma
• Evidence-based and time-limited practices (e.g., DBT, CBT, etc.) in diagnosis, treatment planning, and interventions
• Crisis Intervention, Individual and Group Psychotherapy and Psychological assessments

PREFERRED SKILLS:
• Strong computer literacy and comfort learning new computer programs
• Excellent reading, writing, and public speaking skills
• Ability and willingness to provide in-person or remote clinical care

EQUIPMENT/MACHINES OPERATED:
