Responsibilities*
The research assistant in hearing science will be responsible for conducting auditory-vestibular based research activities in the laboratory setting at the University of Michigan Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. Auditory-vestibular based research activities will include comprehensive audiometry (pure tone and speech), immittance, otoacoustic emissions, auditory brainstem response (ABR)?air conduction, bone conduction, and electrically evoked, hearing aid and cochlear implant fittings and verification, aided speech recognition testing, quantitative vestibular assessments, as well as direct patient contact within the research environment. Basic assessment of auditory and vestibular function will also be required including execution of psychoacoustic-based experiments including tonal detection, masking, spectral and temporal resolution, etc. Additional duties include regular equipment calibration, data entry, data management, as well as organization and IRB- compliant protection of source data collected within the confines of the research project. Depending upon the research activities associated with the given project, the ideal candidate will have experience in data management systems (e.g., REDCap), statistical analysis software (e.g., SPSS, Stata, R), graphical software (e.g., Excel, GraphPad Prism, Sigma Plot), and basic programming experience (e.g., MATLAB).
The research assistant in hearing science will w ork directly with the Principal Investigator (PI) and laboratory personnel [including students (AuD and PhD) and postdocs], as well as clinical audiologists at the University of Michigan for clinically collaborative research projects. Laboratory activities will include supervision of graduate level lab personnel. The research assistant must also be compliant with CITI human subject training. The ideal candidate will hold and maintain experience in IRB application preparation, protocol development, IRB submission, and routine regulatory reporting and study maintenance.
