Responsibilities

The STEM Student Support Specialist in the sciences will provide peer support to STEM and STEM interested students as well as STEM students transferring into Florida State University.

Responsibilities include:
  • Disseminating information focused on academic support, STEM pathways, research opportunities, and campus resources.
  • Conducting STEM consultations.
  • Assisting in the development and delivery of STEM pathways workshops and using AI in the classroom.
  • Conducting classroom presentations on ACE STEM support.
  • Coordinating monthly STEM support sessions for students
  • Collecting information for updates and maintenance of the ACE STEM Support webpage.

Qualifications

  • Current sophomore or junior majoring in the sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, etc.).
  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and be in good standing with the university.
  • Experience in undergraduate research such as UROP, research opportunities for undergraduates (REUs), or STEM focused internships.
  • Working knowledge of AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Co-pilot, etc.
  • Knowledge of or participation in STEM RSOs.
  • Presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of on-campus STEM support including STEM tutoring.
  • Must be able to communicate and interact effectively with students, faculty, administrators, and the public in order to obtain information, explain policies and procedures, and to respond to requests for information.
  • Must be dependable, have compassion for others, patience in dealing with distressed students.
  • Good organizational skills and flexibility.
  • Ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications

Students must have a good understanding of various subjects within the sciences, a strong desire to help peers, and have working knowledge of FSU's on-campus resources. Students with prior experience as a tutor, learning assistant (LA), or peer leadership will be strongly considered.

Anticipated Salary Range

$14 per hour, commensurate with education and experience.

Based on the duties, this position may require completion of a criminal history background check .

This position is part-time, 10-15 hours a week. Candidates will be selected through an interview process and must agree to participate in a two-week paid training during Spring 2025. The position will begin in Fall 2025.
