JOB SUMMARY:

The Phlebotomy supervisor is responsible for the efficient training, orientation and scheduling of the phlebotomy staff to provide high-quality collection services. This individual will coordinate the duties for staff phlebotomists, evaluate workload and schedule phlebotomists appropriately. Also, acting as liaison to the laboratory manager and director. Actively staffs and obtain blood specimens from patients. Adheres to laboratory policy on proper identification of patients and handling of obtained specimen. Responsible for supervising Phlebotomy staff of the Laboratory and assists and reports any issues or concerns to laboratory management. In accordance with personnel job descriptions, maintains a high standard of work and responsible for timely and accurate reporting on all shifts. Establishes accountability among his/her staff, participates in and encourages continuing education. Performs regular in-services, orientates new staff, assist with annual evaluations and prepares work schedules, maintains inventory and staffing within budgetary limitations for Lab. required to attend laboratory related committee meetings and to perform other such duties as required by the Laboratory Administrative Director. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Supervises Phlebotomy staff and performs venipunture on patients from neonates to geriatrics.
  • Participates in and encourages continuing education, fosters positive employee relations and displays a positive attitude.
  • Adequately trains the Phlebotomy Technicians to assume responsibilities during his/her absence.
  • Works with Management and other Supervisors to solve issues.
  • Prepares work schedules, maintains inventory and staffing within budgetary limitations for the Lab.
  • Mantains productivity at an optimal level.
  • Coaches and or counsels employees verbally and in writing when necessary.
  • Schdules staff and fills-in accordingly.
  • Monitors staff overtime.
  • Manages payroll on a daily basis and staffs accordingly.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement relating to the delivery of services in the Laboratory.
  • Works with Laboratory Supervisors and/or other hospital staff to implement recommendations and solutions to improve the patient experience.
  • Ensures timely, thorough investigation and follow-up of incidents related to laboratory performance; assists with corrective action to prevent or minimize recurrence of issues.
  • Communicates with Laboratory Management and keeps them informed of issues affecting or arising from the Laboratory.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of employee and patient information.
  • Hires, trains, schedules and assist with performance evaluations of phlebotomy staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor for the department and facility.

    Qualifications

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Associate degree in a Medical Field or BS degree strongly preferred
    • Phlebotomy certification from an accredited agency required.
    • Two years of laboratory experience including blood drawing and processing required.
    • Two years of supervisory experience preferred.
    • Demonstrates leadership ability.
    • Exceptional customer service skills.
    • Strong service recovery skills.
    • Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
    • Ability to set priorities and resolve problems.
    • Ability to ensure adherence to proper laboratory protocol.
    • Perform lab duties in relation to specimen collection.
    • Assess and maintain laboratory equipment according to standards.
    • Manage phlebotomy team for accuracy, safety, and timeliness.
    • Comfortable working with minimal supervision.
    • Ability to handle confidential materials.
