Our Environment is the isolated planet we share, the collection of natural resources needed to sustain us through this century and beyond, and the social and cultural milieu through which we derive our values about this space. Our Environment is also under enormous stress. The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management is a multidisciplinary program that recognizes the urgency of the challenges, and the enormous opportunities that may lead to transformative change. We have award-winning faculty in climate science, biodiversity, environmental policy, land use, and community outreach - all driven by a collective interest in our environmental future.
Prof. Mayencourt's research merges the fields of forestry, creative structural design, and materials. It explores low-carbon approaches for building structures by leveraging recent advances in manufacturing technologies and computational optimization.
Position Summary
The Wood Shop Manager will assist in research and design projects and help manage the fabrication laboratory of the research woodshop.

This is an 18-month, non-exempt temporary position at 60% (24 hrs a week). This position is paid hourly and is eligible for UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $28.01.

- Design tasks include the design of small pavilions, furniture, and research demonstrators.
- There is an opportunity for the Woodshop Manager to participate in teaching activities.

Responsibilities
Research activities:
- Lead the fabrication of research prototypes, building components, and research demonstrators (up to small pavilion/building scale).
- Manage student support positions for the research fabrication tasks and activities.
- Research documentation.
- Example of research activities:
- Assist in the construction of two wood kilns.
- Design and build conceptual furniture inspired by research initiatives.
- Ensure the proper functioning of the fabrication lab by maintaining machines, and ordering new machines and materials, and consumables when appropriate.
- The employee can pursue individual research ideas, aligned with the general direction of the Lab's research.
- Other supporting tasks could include production such as images and videos for social media.
- Woodworking/carpentry: ability to work with wood at the furniture or building component scale.
- Knowledge with standard woodworking machine.
- Computational design: ability to use CAD software like Rhino3D and use parametric design software like Grasshopper for Rhino3D.
- CNC machining: ability to design for CNC routing and run CNC jobs.
- 3 years of Design or Architecture experience.
