Duties & Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Division Chief, Addiction Program Administrator or Senior Addiction Counselor II, the Addiction Counselor II in the CPEP is an integral member of the interdisciplinary treatment team and will serve as the primary counselor to assess patients who present to the CPEP at risk for substance use.

The Addiction Counselor II will assess patients provide individual counseling, assessments, consultation services in a sensitive and caring manner and will promote the notion of recovery and self-sufficiency as a goal of treatment. They will work in partnership with community resources to help the patient attain access to various treatment options.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct intake screenings and Interview applicants requesting admissions and complete relevant initial application and screening.
  • Explore the treatment needs of the applicant, investigates the strengths and support systems the applicant has and reviews various treatment options available.
  • Conduct screenings using approved screening instruments.
  • Establish therapeutic rapport with each individual and provide1 to 1 counseling to the individual in treatment to identify problems, explore potential solutions and set realistic goals and strategies and provide resources.
  • Counsel and educate patients on the effects of substance use and abuse.
  • Represent the agency in appropriate community education and outreach activities designed to educate hospital staff and general public regarding chemical dependency and the availability of treatment services as well as further the goals of the program.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities.
  • Document activities, services, referrals as well as individual response and ultimate outcome.
  • Maintain confidential case records, medical charts and files on patient caseloads as assigned
  • Promote a positive and pleasant attitude conducive to the workplace, which enhances and furthers the Mission, Vision and Value Statement.
  • Meet all compliance standards.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities.
  • Must exhibit flexibility within the NYC HHC as it pertains to work assignments, work place, site designation and tour of duty.


Minimum Qualifications
1. Valid CASAC - Level 1 Certificate issued by OASAS; and one year of full-time, progressively responsible experience performing SUD assessment, treatment planning, individual and group counseling, case and care management and other functions related to SUD prevention and treatment in a SUD treatment program; or
2. Is otherwise considered a QHP, as described in "2" of Qualification Requirements for Level I above, and has one year of full-time, progressively responsible experience performing SUD assessment, treatment planning, individual and group counseling, case and care management and other functions related to SUD prevention and treatment in a SUD treatment program; or
3. Satisfactory equivalent of education, training, and experience. However, all must have a CASAC Level 1 Certificate issued by OASAS or meet the definition of a QHP as described in "2" above.
