Position Information

The Corpus Christi Area Office is seeking an Assistant Area Engineer who enjoys a fast-paced environment while working in a field setting. This Assistant Area Engineer will manage the construction contract portfolio for the entire Corpus Christi/ Nueces area as well as coordinate ongoing initiatives with local agencies and maintenance sections. This individual will manage a team of construction inspectors and recordkeepers in order to ensure contract quality assurance is maintained for large complex construction.

Position Description

Assists in directing area office operations. Assists in managing and/or supervises employees involved in construction, design, maintenance, survey, laboratory activities and/or office operations. Reports to the Area Engineer, who has full authority for approval of all work. Responsible for the operations of the area office in the absence of the Area Engineer. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

  • Assists Area Engineer in projecting personnel and equipment needed for each project; as required responds for emergency

    situations/conditions to assist with office activities
  • Conducts pre-construction, Employee Forum and/or safety meetings
  • Inspects roads, monitors maintenance activities and coordinates scheduling of maintenance work with construction projects.
  • Keeps abreast of current transportation design innovations, modifications, laws, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Monitors traffic control plans.
  • Oversees right-of-way, design and/or plan preparation for area office.
  • Performs research and planning on future projects.
  • Plans and schedules work of construction personnel and/or provides them on the job training.
  • Prepares and/or recommends field changes and supplemental agreements.
  • Prepares and/or reviews monthly and final estimates and final construction reports.
  • Resolves public complaints.
  • Reviews plans prepared by area office personnel; checks designs, specifications and estimates.
  • Reviews utility permits.
  • Works with governmental officials on behalf of the Area Engineer.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience: 4 years transportation engineering. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Prof Engineer*


*Professional engineers licensed in another state i n the United States , but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
