Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct research in areas of interest and expertise.
  • Develop a strategic plan for seeking grant funding from federal, state, and private sources.
  • Collaborate with research teams on projects that require joint funding applications.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in areas of expertise.
  • Engage in service to the department, university, and academic community.
Successful candidates will support the University and School's mission of facilitating high-impact research activities that can help bridge the divide between academia and the broader public. They will have a strong commitment to mentoring undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students, and to transdisciplinary research, teaching, and service. They will be able to use their expertise to create and develop courses centered on AI.

Qualifications

The applicant must have:
  • an earned doctorate or terminal degree in communication or related field by August 2025
  • the ability to actively pursue and secure external research funding
  • an established or promising program of research and publication
  • a commitment to teaching excellence of undergraduate and graduate students.

The School of Communication on the main campus of Florida State University (FSU) in Tallahassee invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor specializing in Artificial Intelligence (AI). We seek candidates whose work focuses on societal, psychological, relational, and/or cultural implications of AI from positivist and/or critical cultural perspectives. The successful candidate will have a strong record of scholarship as demonstrated by high-quality publications and scholarly work and a strong likelihood of securing external funding.

The School of Communication at FSU is one of three schools within the College of Communication and Information, each dedicated to advancing AI research as a key focus in alignment with the University's strategic goals for scholarship and innovation. The successful candidate will be one of three new faculty members hired this year across the College, all specializing in AI research, further highlighting FSU's commitment to this area, and creating additional opportunities for collaboration in the College and across the University.

The School of Communication has a long-standing reputation for providing innovative research, teaching excellence, and public outreach that influence and lead the field of communication and related industries. It offers undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees in communication focusing on areas including strategic communication, digital media production, media and communication studies, public interest media, and multicultural marketing. Its prolific faculty utilizes critical cultural and positivist investigative approaches and qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methodologies.
