Under the general direction of the Office Chief of Traffic Operations, a Supervising Transportation Engineer, the Senior Transportation Electrical Engineer (STEE) as the Branch Chief supervises and provides technical guidance in the planning, scope, development, management, and operation of the District's Traffic Signals, Ramp Metering and Traffic Census systems to ensure they are operated safely with maximum efficiency. The Branch Chief is responsible for implementing continuous improvement processes to increase the productivity of the staff, reduce cost and maintain or increase quality in Caltrans products and services and is also responsible for ensuring that they, along with their staff, develop and monitor standards for customer service for both internal and external customers. Must possess a valid license as an Electrical Engineer issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.

Working Conditions
Position(s) located in Irvine, CA.

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

While in the office, will work in a climate controlled office under artificial light. Must be able to work in the field with changing climatic conditions of extreme heat and cold and may be exposed to traffic conditions, dirt, noise and uneven surfaces. Travel may be required to complete work assignments at more remote locations.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

  • This position requires possession of a valid certificate of registration as an electrical engineer issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing including technical reports, and group presentations for various groups and settings, such as, Caltrans Executives and Managers; Local Agency Supervisors and staff; District Traffic Manager; Traffic Operations Supervisors; Electrical Design Branch; Construction Engineers; and Maintenance Managers and Superintendents.
  • Demonstrated experience in estimating and managing Traffic Operations and Capital Outlay Support resources; and the use of workplans for managing work assignments and meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience with proposing and initiating projects and managing work related to traffic signals, ramp metering and traffic census systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and supervising the work of a professional staff, and implementation of Department personnel policies related to the supervision and protection of employees.
  • Demonstrated ability to build & strengthen partnerships with Caltrans' internal & external customers, including other Caltrans Divisions, Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), California Highway Patrol and traffic engineers at local agencies or cities.
