Position Overview
The CTCCE and Surgery Education Program Manager is a shared position between the Center for Trauma and Critical Care Education (CTCCE) and Surgery Education. For the CTCCE, the Lead Instructor is responsible for initial EMS programs. EMS Instructors must be familiar with program goals, able to demonstrate the ability to follow an organized plan of instruction and have appropriate credentials for the learning areas they teach in the laboratory setting or educational program discipline. Provide frequent assessments of the students' progress in achieving overall program requirements. Performs duties assigned under the direction of supervisor and work collaboratively with other faculty and staff as they pertain to the courses taught and other requests that may be assigned to the CTCCE. This position reports to the Paramedic Program Director in coordinating the logistical support of current and future courses. Assisting in completing processes to maintain program accreditation and to ensure records related to the program are maintained are readily accessible.

For the Department of Surgery, the Manager will assist with planning and implementation of simulation courses and learning events as directed by the Surgical Simulation Administrator who works collaboratively with CTCCE leadership in meeting the needs of Surgery Education.

Typical Duties & Expectations

CTCCE Lead Instructor
  • Provides instruction including didactic, laboratory to include skill and simulation sessions.
  • Ensures that courses have the necessary supplies and equipment
  • Ensures equipment is maintained in optimal condition for instruction
  • Evaluates student competence based on program objectives
  • Maintains accurate roster records
  • Attends regularly scheduled faculty meetings
  • Assesses student progress in achieving theory (cognitive content), performance (psychomotor competencies), and professional behavior (affective) requirements of the program.
    Demonstrates evidence-based teaching
  • Maintains current standards of practice in all classes taught
  • Responsible for following the educational objectives and schedule that meets the requirements set forth by the CTCCE faculty
  • Where applicable, maintain a student to instructor ratio of no more than 6 students per instructor for skills training and testing
  • Approaches teaching and learning from a coaching-mentoring paradigm where non-punitive feedback is encouraged
  • Complies with all academic and regulatory policies that VCU and VCU Health have regarding working with students, such as FERPA
  • Complies with all regulatory requirements as specified by Virginia Office of EMS
  • Complies with national organization policies and standards such as the American Heart Association, National Association of EMT's and CAAHEP when applicable.
CTCCE Administrative
  • Assist the Paramedic Program Director in maintaining the documentation for CAAHEP accreditation
  • Graduation and Employee Surveys
  • Annual RAM surveys of students, faculty, advisory board
  • Assists with data collection to complete Annual Report, Continuing Self-Study Reports
  • Assists in maintaining and utilizing interest list for future courses
  • Assists in processing applications for entrance requirements, acceptance and start of class
  • Assists with logistics of textbooks, program apparel and processes with the onboarding of new students
  • Assists in maintaining student files from application to graduation
  • Assists with maintaining current and future satellite locations for the Paramedic Program
  • May help in coordinating instructors and equipment for upcoming lab or educational courses
  • May help write lesson plans and/or lab goals/agenda for each session
  • Represents CTCCE in a positive manner to internal and external constituents
  • Attends departmental and Paramedic Program faculty meetings
CTCCE Practice
  • Maintains professional qualifications through participation in continuing education programs and academic courses
  • Contributes toward professional growth by attending workshops, conferences, faculty meetings, academic courses and professional memberships
  • Attends regular staff meetings, may be required to attend departmental or university meetings
  • Recruits qualified instructors and provide instructors with all relevant information and materials needed for teaching
  • Maintains accurate records of participant attendance, certifications, and other relevant information, ensuring compliance with certification requirements
  • Ensures that all certification classes meet the established standards of quality and content integrity.
Surgery Education
  • Provides assistance in the planning, set up, running and tear down of surgical simulation training for General Surgery and sub-specialty residency and fellowship training
  • Proctors, as needed for FLS and FES testing
  • Assists with the planning and logistics of labs involving human tissue
  • Manages data collection of surgical training, numbers of learners, hours of training, types of simulation training, etc
  • Assists Surgical Simulation Administrator in oversight of the Surgery Education and Professional Development Fund. Generates invoices, follows up on payments and tracks expenditures
  • Assists in the oversight of vendor sponsored labs/revenue generation for the Surgical Education and Professional Development Fund
  • Fields and assists with responding to requests for hosting simulation training in the Center for Human Simulation and Patient Safety and the Cottrell Surgical Innovation Suite
  • Assists with management of the ACS AEI Annual Report for accreditation
