Why does the job exist?

The Data Analyst IV serves as an integral member of the Public Education Department's Division of Assessment, Research, Evaluation, and Accountability. As a member of this collegial team, this position helps implement New Mexico's highly visible system of school, district, state and federal accountability by accurately analyzing and reporting K-12 education data from multiple sources.

How does it get done?

The Data Analyst IV:
¿ Validates student-level performance data for one or more assessment programs
¿ Collaborates with the Information Technology (IT) Bureau to ensure the successful matching of demographic data to vendor-provided assessment records
¿ Presents aggregated performance data in a consistent format for multiple policy and research purposes
¿ Meets rigorous expectations for precision and accuracy by developing quality control procedures
¿ Establishes and maintains friendly, service-oriented relationships (internal and external to PED) with education stakeholders, particularly when working with school district staff to confirm or correct
anomalous data
¿ Makes decisions informed by past practice, current context, and an attitude of continuous improvement.

Who are the customers?

Education stakeholders, such as parents and students; policymakers; teachers; superintendents, principals, and other district/school leadership; and internal department staff including the Secretary of Education.

Ideal Candidate

The Ideal Candidate may have:
1. Skill in data analysis and scripting/coding using one or more relevant statistical packages, such as SAS, SPSS, STATA, and R
2. Skill in transforming datasets from multiple sources to fit prescribed file layouts
3. Oral communication skills as portrayed by presentations to disparate groups
4. Written communication skills, with a specific ability to convey technical concepts to a broad audience
5. Fluency in Microsoft Office products, specifically Excel
6. Tackles areas of research to increase stakeholder and policymaker knowledge related to academic progress
7. Use research results to write reports, papers and reviews and present findings to internal and external stakeholders and present at conference.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Business or Public Administration, Accounting, Finance, Economics, or other related field with nine (9) years of experience directly related to position at time of posting. Or related professional certification as determined by the hiring agency. Six (6) or more years of experience in advanced analytics demonstrating strong analytical skills and communication skills.

Working Conditions

Office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
