Job Description

Purpose of Position:

Reporting to the Associate Deputy Executive Director of Nursing, the Director of Nursing (DON) of Nursing Professional Development is responsible for the coordination of orientation and ongoing training of the staff, evaluating the quality of care rendered in the Department of Nursing, as well as for the implementation of the Nursing Department philosophy and objectives, ensuring compliance to established standards of nursing practice as promulgated by regulatory agencies and professional nursing organizations.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Provides oversight on all educational programs for licensed and unlicensed staff.
  • Identifies essential competencies for licensed and non-licensed staff within the Department of Nursing and assures appropriate educational opportunities exist to promote the growth and the development of the staff.
  • Participates as an active member of the Policy & Procedure Committee.
  • Participates in clinical service committees, interdisciplinary meetings and task forces.
  • Provide oversight for educational academic affiliations.
  • Supports and oversees educational requirements for accredited programs such as Trauma, TJC.
  • Assume leadership role in identifying opportunities for improvement, defining goals and developing solutions.
  • Serves on committees and attend meetings as required.
  • Facilitates the initiation and adoption of changes in nursing practice and organization.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by Supervisor and/or designee.


Minimum Qualifications
1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State; and,
2. A Master's Degree in Nursing Administration or an equivalent field, and a minimum of four years of high-level responsible experience in nursing administration, three years of which shall have been in a hospital; or,
3. A satisfactory equivalent. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.
