Job Description

Under supervision, is responsible for repair, calibration, maintenance, and monitoring of clinical/patient care equipment technologies, devices, instruments, and systems. Exhibits knowledge and understanding of the use of various clinical equipment, common clinical terminology, electro-mechanical systems, and devices. Performs professional-level inventory assessment/audits and preventive/corrective maintenance of clinical equipment, documenting all service events by established departmental policies and procedures. Provides support both on-site and remotely to a healthcare setting or within an assigned area. Ensures optimal utilization of resources and compliance with applicable local, state, and federal rules and regulations.

For Assignment to Level I:

Under supervision, performs assigned duties related to repair, calibration, and maintenance of all types of general clinical equipment technologies, devices, instruments, and systems used in the delivery of health care. Demonstrates proper use of tools and machinery required to complete repairs. The following are typical tasks for both Assignment Level I and II:
1. Repairs, installs, maintains, calibrates, and inspects a diverse range of general therapeutic and diagnostic biomedical instrumentation and equipment; troubleshoots basic computer issues (i.e. printer, display, and other peripherals).
2. Inspects, installs, and performs preventive maintenance and electrical safety testing of general clinical equipment, devices, and systems.
3. Diagnoses and corrects system and equipment malfunctions and ensures appropriate personnel are kept informed of technical updates and equipment-related problems; maintains documentation on new equipment, inspections, and equipment repairs and failures.
4. Researches and initiates orders for repair parts, working within established budget parameters.
5. Reviews outcomes of preventive maintenance actions and makes recommendations to department staff concerning improvements.
6. Ensures ongoing compliance and maintenance with NYC Health + Hospitals policies and procedures and other applicable external regulatory requirements.
7. Participates in quality assurance/performance improvement (QA/PI) activities, programs, meetings, seminars, and training, as required.
8. Troubleshoots with Enterprise IT Services (EITS) to resolve networking issues with medical devices connected to the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS)
9. Effectively communicates in common clinical terms with clinicians and allied health professionals regarding the use and status of clinical equipment and devices.
10. Provides education to other staff including clinical staff related to equipment operations and maintenance and technical integration of the device/system.
11. Maintains a complete and accurate inventory of all medical equipment, devices, instrumentation, supplies, and other relevant equipment and tools; performs periodic inspections of current inventory status, and makes recommendations regarding inventory.
12. Documents all testing, maintenance, and repair work, according to departmental procedures. Assists in maintaining current database inventory of clinical equipment and service histories of equipment; prepares and submits other appropriate reports, as necessary.
13. May be required, on an emergency basis, to respond to calls from clinical departments to evaluate and rectify operator complaints, issues, and concerns.
14. Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

For Assignment to Level I:
1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline and three (3) years of experience servicing a broad range of clinical/patient care equipment, clinical devices, and network medical systems in a hospital, health care facility or military biomedical equipment training and experience; or
2. Holds and maintains a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) certification issued by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) Credentials Institute (ACI) or the International Certification Commission (ICC) and three (3) years of experience, as described in #1 above; or
3. Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Biomedical Technology, Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, or a related discipline and five (5) years of experience, as described in #1 above.
