General Summary of Position
In collaboration with MGUH Nursing Leadership, develops Nurse Retention, Engagement, & Recognition annual plan. Coordinates & Implements plan per design.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serves as a nurse retention and engagement expert. Meets regularly and conducts focus groups with nurses to identify challenges and communicate feedback to leadership, with a focus on realistic solutions.
  • Consults with departments to provide support and guidance on recruitment and retention strategies designed to meet their specific department needs and ensure perfect placement of candidates (to include unit summaries/videos, engagement with department practice councils, peer interviewing). Acts as liaison with Talent Acquisition to execute on Unit Leader desired ideal candidate.
  • Meets individually with nurses to discuss transfers and change of status requests. Promotes bridge programs and development of positions that meet the needs of the current nursing workforce (PRN, Part-time, Float Pool, Virtual, Day shift, job share, etc).
  • Works with nurses at all stages of their development to assist with Career Planning/Mapping and other professional support.
  • In collaboration with Talent Acquisition develops a comprehensive, multi-state university recruitment effort, focusing on tier one schools, feeder schools and schools with a diverse population of students. Coordinates and participates in job fairs, career days, conferences and open house events. Develops slate of MGUH Nurse Representatives for all events.
  • Promotes and assists with Clinical Advancement achievement for bedside nurses.
  • Provides coaching for Patient Care Technicians and other assistive personnel who are interested in furthering education, focusing on future promotion to LPN and RN roles.
  • Executes formal internal recognition programs such as Annual Nursing Awards, National Nursing Awards, Shout Outs, Dept Nurse of the Year. Assists with writing nominations for external awards for individuals and departments (Beacon, Prism, ANCC Magnet Nurse of the Year, etc).
  • Implements mentoring programs for nurses (Year One Extension, Reverse Mentoring, Nursing Academy).
  • Drafts and contributes to publications and communications for all Clinical Nurses (Nurses Huddle, Nursing Annual Report, Nursing Website Enhancement, Nursing Spotlight).
  • Plans socialization activities to assist with creating a network in DC (book clubs, running group, kickball team, Happy Hours for new associates, etc)
  • Plans, organizes, and directs promotional approaches and programs that promote professional nursing practice at MGUH to enhance retention and maintain Magnet Status for the division of nursing.
  • Provides guidance leadership for Magnet Champions to empower the group to take a more active role in achievement of Magnet, community service and retention activities.
  • Plans and hosts Nurses Week and other nursing celebrations.
  • Leads Preceptor Recognition Program and Nurse Leader Recognition Program.
  • Manages the Nurse Extern Program. Takes a proactive role in driving a high percentage of conversions to NTP nurses.
  • In collaboration with Talent Acquisition implements a regular boomerang effort to recruit back former MGUH associates.
  • Coordinates with Analyst to track retention, turnover, vacancy, backfill and other nursing workforce data.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered as all inclusive.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education
    • Bachelor's degree Bachelors of Art or Bachelors Science required or
    • Bachelor's degree Bachelor's of Science in Nursing preferred

    Experience
    • 3-4 years A minimum of three to four years of related experience, preferably in an academic setting required and
    • 3-4 years Inpatient bedside nursing experience preferred or
    • 3-4 years Talent acquisition/full-cycle nurse recruitment preferred

    Licenses and Certifications
    • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure RN License in the District of Columbia Upon Hire required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees and the public.
    • Ability to think abstractly and analytically; knowledge of organizational staffing in either a hospital or university setting and broad understanding of human resource principles, including basic knowledge of compensation.
