Responsibilities

The Department of Philosophy at Florida State University, in collaboration with The Florida Institute for Governance and Civics (IGC), invites applications for one or two positions in the Philosophy department, at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank with an area of specialization in the history of modern political philosophy or the philosophy of law/constitutionalism. We seek scholars who have interests in the philosophical foundations of the U.S. republic and a demonstrated commitment to the mission of enhancing civic understanding and awareness. Any successful candidate will be expected to teach a course on the philosophical foundations of American constitutionalism and to engage in IGC programming.

The normal teaching load is four courses per year (2-2) on a semester system. Duties include research, teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and service. The Department of Philosophy is an active research department with a strong graduate program, and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research and scholarship through high quality publications in top-tier venues. These are full-time, 9-month, tenured or tenure-track positions with an anticipated start date of August 2025.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Philosophy or equivalent terminal degree at the time of appointment
  • Interest in connecting scholarship and teaching to civic education, constitutionalism, and civic virtue
  • A clear record of research activity equivalent to that of an associate professor (if seeking that rank) or full professor (if seeking that rank) at an R1 research university
  • An established record of successful teaching at the university level, commensurate with the rank being sought, and a demonstrated ability to teach and participate in our strong philosophy undergraduate, M.A., and Ph.D. programs

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates who possess experience with public-facing civics initiatives are desired.
