Job Description

Purpose of Position:

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of the Cancer Outreach Program, the Public Health Educator is a member of an interdisciplinary hospital team. Expands the availability and use of screening services and education regarding cancer-preventive lifestyle choices. Provide patient navigation to patients in need of cancer screening through resolution. Provide education/support for issues related to cancer screening in conjunction with community resources. Collect data as needed in order to assess program efficiency and success.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Meet the goals and objectives of the Cancer Screening & Outreach Department (Viva Mujer)
  • May lead the outreach portion of the program as needed in the absence of the assistant coordinator manager or director.
  • Maximizes outreach and advertisement of the Cancer Outreach Program in an effort to increase screenings and awareness in the community.
  • Provides patients with Patient Navigation during their clinic visit. Assist in registration and advocacy for new patients coming for screening services through the outreach program (Viva Mujer). And complete Cancer Screening Program Screening Intake Forms for uninsured patients.
  • Responsible for Cancer Screening Care Gaps projects to meet HEDIS/QUARR metrics.
  • Assists in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with and between community-based organizations contributing to the health education of the public.
  • Focus outreach efforts to undocumented and under-insured patients for eligibility and enrollment to the Cancer Services Program screening services to maximize reimbursement for cancer screening services rendered by the facility.
  • Assists in special projects as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Designs, develops and conducts health education workshops, presentations, health fairs, and forums on cancer-related topics.
  • Prepares marketing tools, incentives, etc to advertise services to the community.
  • Participates and conducts health events of the month for in-house facility and community-based organizations.
  • Attends as deemed necessary hospital and local community meetings.


Minimum Qualifications
1. A masters degree from an accredited college or university in public health education, education, public/community health administration, public administration or business administration, and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in developing public health education programs, including identifying target populations, conducting needs assessments, designing educational materials, planning educational presentations or workshops,
evaluating health education programs; presenting public health education programs; and/or counseling in areas such as communicable diseases, substance abuse, assault, sexual abuse, and/or family planning; or,
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of full-time satisfactory experience as outlined in one (1) above.
