Job Summary

Individual should be able to act as a leader within the lab as well as the Caswell Diabetes Institute, working comfortably with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and roles. The employee will typically analyze, compare, and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities. Primary activities and decision-making authority are predominantly performed independently, affecting business operations to a substantial degree.

Responsibilities*

Research: Operates with considerable latitude in unreviewed actions or decisions. Works independently to develop, design, and conduct experiments. Gathers data, reviews progress, and screens, verifies, and analyzes data. Interprets and implements research methodology based on outcome of analysis. Consults with others to refine or adapt methodologies to fit research requirements; collaborates in the development of new techniques, and suggests options for improving quality, identifies potential problems, and recommends and implements solutions. Presents on findings, and co-authors publications.

Institute administration: Works closely with other labs, departments and organizations on behalf of the Caswell Diabetes Institute. Maintains shared Institute resources and supplies. Collaborates with multiple labs in equipment operation and laboratory techniques, explains and demonstrates technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations, and outcomes. Disseminates pertinent information to members of the Institute and acts as a leader and reliable contact for multiple labs.

Animal colony management: Works with others to organize animals within the colony, including tagging and genotyping individuals, overseeing animal health and wellbeing, controlling colony size, maintaining strain records, coordinating imports/exports. Keeps animal colony software up to date. Works with external genotyping and software companies to ensure accurate and timely results.

Required Qualifications*
  • Employees in this classification are required to have a minimum of a Bachelor degree in a recognized field of science or learning which is directly related to the duties of the position.
  • Must have 4 to 5 years of related experience.
  • Experience with lab management is required, functional supervisory and financial experience is preferred.
  • Experience working with mice is required, including experience with genotyping and colony management.
  • Experience with the dissection and processing of mouse brain tissue and the subsequent IHC and snRNA-seq analysis is sought.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Masters degree/PhD is desired.
  • Functional supervisory and financial experience is preferred.
  • Experience handling rats is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the labs colony management software, Colony by Transnetyx, is a bonus.

Modes of Work

Background Screening
