Job Summary

This position may be filled at the level of 102905-Research Area Specialist Associate or 102907-Research Area Specialist Intermediate, depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant.

A Research Area Specialist is sought to work closely with the PI and the research team at the Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention at the University of Michigan to develop, design, and conduct Institute projects and initiatives. This is a hybrid position which requires at least 2 days per week onsite, in-person working in our Ann Arbor office, and quarterly in-person meetings with key project stakeholders in Lansing. Key initial activities include managing the development and maintenance of an Institute grant-funded project; coordinating activities with partner organizations and subgrantees; providing oversight and project management for the evaluation of the grant; providing training and technical assistance to community partners, including sharing tailored resources on evaluation and evidence-based best practices for violence prevention programs and ERPO implementation and conducting needs assessments to assess program implementation progress, engagement, perceived barriers, and technical assistance needed for rapid cycle quality improvement, managing the development and implementation of a best practices guide for community violence interventions on a local scale; and providing oversight and management of multiple program evaluations.

The job functions of this role will include, but are not limited to:

Develop, design, and conduct a variety of program evaluations of community violence prevention initiatives.

Review progress and evaluate results of community violence prevention initiatives and create and follow timelines.

Formulate research methods and suggest options for improving quality, identify potential problems, recommend and implement solutions.

Consult with community organizations and subgrantees to refine or adapt methodologies to fit research requirements, and collaborate in development of new techniques and instruments.

Develop protocol and criteria for subgrantee community violence prevention programs, and gather data, supervise data collection and verification, and conduct and provide oversight for literature reviews.

Providing technical assistance to community partners, including sharing tailored resources on evaluation and evidence-based best practices for violence prevention programs and ERPO implementation and conducting needs assessments to assess program implementation progress, engagement, perceived barriers, and technical assistance needed for rapid cycle quality improvement.

Draft language and content for best practices guide and other communications related to the grant.

Identify and update evidence-based practices on violence prevention programs and ERPO implementation through systematic literature reviews and subject matter expert consultation.

Coordinate efforts for creating a comprehensive catalog of state-wide community violence intervention programs.

Tracking and reporting on activities, preparing reports, planning and organizing events.

Managing budgets and financial reporting to funder.

Drafting and managing IRBs and data use agreements.

Perform data analysis and interpretation of results.

Required Qualifications*

Master's degree

1-3 years of experience (Associate level) or 4-5 years of related experience (Intermediate level) and/or research project coordination with a demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects to deadline

Sufficient knowledge of data management and statistical analyses necessary for program evaluation using R, Stata or SPSS

Effective organization and management of multiple priorities in a complex environment

Excellent communication skills, both oral and written

Careful attention to detail

Ability to both work independently and as a successful team member

Desired Qualifications*

3+ years of program evaluation at both moderate to large scale projects across community, school, and policy domains.

Experience with academic research enterprises including: externally sponsored research, research administration, and funding sources.

Proven ability to lead large, cross-departmental programs and projects, building consensus across stakeholders and ensuring project requirements are met

Demonstrated knowledge of firearm injury prevention is preferred, but not necessary.

The Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention is a transdisciplinary institute that works to engage the breadth of expertise across the University of Michigan, with input from nonacademic stakeholders, to generate knowledge and advance solutions that will decrease firearm injury in the United States.
