Job Summary

The Research Area Specialist will assist with design, implementation and maintenance of a highly complex RedCap database for the Department of Anesthesiology, Clinical Neuroscience Division, for a PCORI funded multicenter clinical trial (enhancetrial.org) across 8 national sites. This position will monitor key performance metrics and provide weekly data query reports, and oversee data entry cleaning, editing, and creation of analysis files. This position will participate in weekly standardization meetings via zoom across sites run by the Data Core at University of Michigan. This position will serve as the immediate point of contact for all database related issues, including end-user support and auditing across multiple sites. One major requirement for this position is the familiarity with RedCap which is used as the primary tool for managing trial data. This position will report to the Clinical Research Project Manager for the Clinical Neuroscience Division of Anesthesiology.

This is a term-limited position through February 2028, with the possibility of an extension.

Responsibilities*
  • Designs, implements, and maintains highly complex databases. Maintains database dictionaries and integration of system through database design.
  • Ensures data integrity and quality by performing periodic data cleaning and validation procedures.
  • Diagnose, identify, and resolve time-sensitive technical or data problems, including programming and procedural errors.
  • Analyzes, compares, and evaluates various courses of action. Interprets business and clinical needs into appropriate data-oriented solutions.
  • Creating/developing, presenting, and explaining reports for study milestone metrics to trial leadership and sponsors.
  • Serves as immediate point of contact for all database related issues, including end-user support and auditing across multiple sites.
  • Participates in weekly standardization meetings via zoom across sites.

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, computer science. data science, information science, healthcare management
  • Minimum of 4 years of related experience.
  • With at least 2 years of clinical trials experience and familiarity with proper data collection and at least basic knowledge of study design and data management.
  • With at least 3 years of data management programming experience using common data management tools such as REDCAP.
  • Strong computing skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Detail-oriented and able to work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Eagerness to learn and adapt to new techniques and technologies.
  • Experience must demonstrate knowledge of basic programming concepts and include experience combining data from disparate sources, programming reports, cleaning and preparing data for analysis, and debugging data in complex applications.
  • Experience querying, managing, and testing data in applications that store data in relational databases, including broad knowledge of relational database concepts.
  • Strong organizational skills including experience prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced production environment. This includes the ability to multitask.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Ability to run basic statistical analyses under the direction of a statistician, including descriptive statistics and hypothesis testing is desired.
  • Publication Support: Collaborate with researchers to contribute to the preparation of research papers and publications.
  • Data Privacy and Ethics: Knowledge of data privacy regulations (e.g., HIPAA) and ethical considerations in healthcare research is desired.

Additional Information

Please note: This position is term-limited through February 2028 with the possibility of renewal based on need and available funding. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate, and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.
