Position Information

The Safety Officer II, III or IV position would assist the Lufkin District's various departments in morning safety meetings, end of the day huddles, and work to ensure compliance of policies, guidelines, and procedures. This position will play a very crucial role by working closely with crews and managers in both the offices and out on the Texas Roadways to build a strong safety culture as we move forward.

This position is for one Safety Officer II, III or IV. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Position Description

Safety Officer II

Oversees or assists in overseeing a district safety program in accordance with the Occupational Safety Division Manual or Rules and Regulations Governing Ferry Operations. Works to create an active interest in accident prevention and the safety program. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Safety Officer III

Oversees or a district safety program in accordance with the Occupational Safety Division Manual or Rules and Regulations governing Ferry Operations. Works to create an active interest in accident prevention and the safety program. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Safety Officer IV

Oversees or a district safety program in accordance with the Occupational Safety Division Manual or Rules and Regulations governing Ferry Operations. Works to create an active interest in accident prevention and the safety program. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

Safety Officer II

  • Administers the new employee driver's orientation program and the vehicle safety program.
  • Coordinates and schedules employee safety awards and the annual Safety Awards Banquet/Truck Roadeo.
  • Monitors compliance with material safety data sheet (MSDS) requirements and monitors and recommends updates for Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) plan.
  • Coordinates safety meetings; usually involves planning, conducting, coordinating schedules and providing literature and audio-visual material.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Safety Officer III

The above and:

  • Plans, schedules and administers training on safety issues including defensive driving, CPR, first-aid, fleet safety and hazardous materials; maintains training records.


Safety Officer IV

The above and:

  • Administers the hazardous substance spill contingency plan, emergency planning program and violence prevention program.
  • Inspects equipment and work areas.
  • Plans, schedules and monitors programs or activities that promote employee safety and accident prevention.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Safety, Industrial Technology, Business Admin or related discipline. Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

Safety Officer II : 1 year occupational safety, Industrial hygiene or related work areas.

Safety Officer III : 2 years occupational safety, Industrial hygiene or related work areas.

Safety Officer IV : 3 years occupational safety, Industrial hygiene or related work areas.

*Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
